INCIDENT UPDATE: Bush Fire
At 1.30 pm on Saturday, 2 May 2026, firefighters responded to a bush fire in bushland off Walker Street in Helensburgh.
Crews located a hangout area behind the Helensburgh Library where a lounge had been deliberately set alight.
Helensburgh Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade assisted by using water‑filled knapsacks to safely access the area and fully extinguish the smouldering fire.
A number of young people were observed nearby, some riding e‑bikes and others moving through the surrounding bushland.
While no injuries were reported, incidents like this present serious risks to the safety of young people, emergency responders, and the wider community.
Fires can spread quickly and unpredictably, particularly in bushland areas, placing lives at risk and causing lasting environmental damage.
Firefighters encourage parents, carers, and guardians to speak with young people about fire safety, responsible behaviour, and the very real consequences of lighting fires - not just legally, but to their own safety and the safety of others.
Early conversations and community awareness play an important role in preventing harm and keeping everyone safe.
