Spring is here, and that means it’s time to dust off your fire plan and emergency kit and start getting your property ready for the upcoming fire season.

The warmer weather is a great opportunity to get stuck into those jobs you’ve been putting off — clear vegetation, tidy up around buildings, check access points to make sure we'll fit where required and make sure your property is prepared.

Think it’s too early? It’s not.

Fire services across the country are already preparing for the season, and some parts of Australia have already entered their Fire Danger Period.

We’ve seen it time and time again, property preparation matters. The work you do now can make a real difference when a fire threatens your property.

CFA District 12 is hosting a FREE Defending Your Property Workshop. This full-day, face-to-face session will give you the practical skills and knowledge you need.

What the workshop covers:
🔴 Understanding fire behavior and Fire Danger Ratings.
🔴 Assessing and modifying property risks.
🔴 Physical and psychological preparedness.
🔴 Water, resources, and equipment requirements.
🔴 Practical session: Hands-on experience with pumps, hoses, and equipment!

▫️ Time: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
▫️ Location: Hilldene Fire Station (470 Seymour-Tooborac Rd, Hilldene)

These little things you probably never notice or even know what they are.
But when they’re needed, they have to be clear and quickly accessible.

If there’s a fire hydrant outside or near your house, adopt it. Keep the cover and markers free of grass, bushes and garden beds so firefighters can see and reach it in seconds. Never park on or too close to it.

Missing or damaged white triangle, blue reflector or marker post? Report it to Council through their 'Report it tool' online
Leaking? Call the water board.

In many areas you can be fined for parking on or to close or obstructing a hydrant. That fine is nothing compared to the cost of lost seconds when the truck arrives and can’t get water.

Blocking or hiding a hydrant can cost your family, your property and your neighbours the vital time needed to get critical water on a fire.

Keep them visible and clear. They’re emergency infrastructure, not decoration.

Who cares if you think it makes your lawn or gardens look untidy when it can save your family.

Recently, Hilldene Fire Brigade hosted our annual Awards Night at the Seymour RSL, bringing together members from across the generations and from all walks of life to celebrate what makes our brigade what it is.
It was a fantastic opportunity to recognise not only the achievements and dedication of our members, but also the families and support networks behind them. Our brigade is built on people. Those who turn up, put in the work, support each other and continue to serve their community year after year.

Service awards on the night ranged from 5 years of service through to an incredible 60+ years, highlighting the depth of experience, commitment and history within Hilldene.
Members were also recognised with National Emergency Medal clasps, National Medals and National Medal clasps, acknowledging service and dedication during some of Australia's most significant emergencies.

From those just beginning their journey to those who have dedicated decades of their lives to the brigade, every recipient has played a part in shaping Hilldene CFA.

A great night, great company and a great opportunity to stop, reflect and recognise some truly outstanding achievements.

My name is Molly I am a (honorary) member of Hilldene Fire Brigade.
I am doing the virtual stair climb raising funds for the 000 foundation and the Peter Mac cancer hospital. It’s something that is very close to my heart because my Dad (who I love a lot) was in Peter Mac and is now cancer free so I thought I would help the cause.

Every time the pager goes off, the phone rings or the call comes through, emergency service personnel leave the safety of their homes, families and workplaces to answer someone else's call for help.

Behind every set of red, blue, magenta or amber flashing lights are people working to protect, support and serve our community and loved ones waiting for them to return home safely.

If you see flashing lights, slow down to 40 km/h, stay alert, follow directions and give emergency responders the space they need to do their job safely.

This powerful video, created by our friends and colleagues from across the Seymour emergency services, is a reminder that every responder deserves to make it home.

🚨 AUSALERT NATIONAL TEST 🚨

We would like to remind our community that the Australian Government will be conducting a national test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system on Monday 27 July at 2:00 pm (AEST).

During the test, compatible mobile phones, smart watches and tablets will:
• Vibrate
• Sound a loud siren-like alert for around 10 seconds
• Display a message clearly stating it is only a test
• Activate even if your device is on silent or Do Not Disturb

No action is required when you receive the test message. It is simply to ensure the new system is working correctly before it is introduced nationally later this year.

⚠️ Important information for people experiencing domestic and family violence:

The AusAlert test may present a safety risk for people who keep a hidden or "safe" phone.
If receiving the alert could put you or someone you know at risk, official advice is to:
• Turn the hidden device off or place it in aeroplane mode before the test.
• Keep it off or in aeroplane mode for up to 24 hours, if it is safe to do so.

This new warning system has been designed to help save lives during emergencies such as bushfires, floods and other major incidents. By taking part in this test, we can all help ensure it's ready when it's needed most.

Thursday 30th July you'll see an increase of Emergency services and other related activities in Seymour and Surrounds.
Procced with caution and care. Follow any signage that you may see relating to the exercise.

All services will still be available to respond to any real emergencies that may arise during this time.

🚨🚒 !! Exercise !! 🚨🚒

Thursday 30th July from 1300-2200

Due to a Major Multi-Agency Exercise that will be conducted in the Wider-Seymour area, you will see an increase in Emergency Service vehicles and Personnel during this time.

Personnel will start preparing at identified exercise sites from 1pm.

Responders will base themselves at the Seymour Cricket Club from 4:30pm before engaging in an exercise that will finish around 10pm.

Please exercise caution around these vehicles as these members will be operating under instruction throughout this time.

🚧ROAD CLOSURE – DELATITE ROAD, SEYMOUR 🚧

Delatite Road, Seymour is currently closed due to flooding between Wimble Street and Tarcombe Road.

Please do not attempt to drive through floodwater or bypass road closures. Floodwater can be deeper or faster flowing than it appears and may conceal hazards beneath the surface.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek an alternative route until the road is reopened.
VICSES, Victoria Police and Mitchell Shire Council will be monitoring the area, and the closure will remain in place until it is safe for the road to reopen.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Please continue to monitor local conditions and drive safely.
