What an honour it was to be invited to open the South Australian Country Women's Assoc. (SACWA) Spencer Group Table Day as the first woman elected to Mayor of Yorke Peninsula Council 🥰

The Spencer Group includes the Moonta Branch in the Copper Coast Council our close neighbour, Mayor Roslyn Talbot, highlighting the wonderful representation of women in leadership across our greater region.

I am absolutely in awe of the incredible work these women continue to do in our communities. Thank you to Julie Bailey for sharing a presentation on the SACWA Baby Parcels program (2nd pic). Handcrafted with care and filled with practical essentials, these parcels provide valuable support to mothers in need as they welcome a new baby into the world 👶🏼 If you would like to see these parcels available in your community, please get in touch.

And wow, Rhiana Bretag - RFDS Nurse, Midwife, and wearer of many other hats too! 👩🏼‍⚕️ I could have listened to you speak about your experiences and perspectives all day.

Thank you to every single person who has contributed to the CWA’s enduring role in preserving and passing down practical knowledge, skills and traditions from one generation to the next.

You are keeping our country heritage alive, strengthening the fabric of regional Australia, and ensuring these valuable traditions continue for future generations.

The Local Government Association (LGA) Conference & Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) was held on Friday. I’ll do my best to make this post interesting… but I completely respect if conferences are not your cup of tea 🫖

During a breakout session on disaster resilience and recovery, it became clear once again that Yorkes ticks all the boxes … and in this case that’s not BINGO

Our challenges are as vast as our region, and our community is resilient through necessity, determination and tenacity.
We will get back up every single time, and we’ll stand stronger because of who we are.

Engaging addresses from the LGA President, Minister for Local Government, incoming LGA CEO, Shadow Minister and panel members provided valuable insight.

As always, the conversations around the table between sessions were just as valuable with opportunities to learn, connect and network with the Local Government community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts and experiences.

Delegates for the meeting vote electronically (see button in pic). Just like Council meetings, you cannot abstain and divisions can be called where how you voted will be included in the minutes. Notable items on the agenda included advocacy initiatives for the LGA to take to the State Government.

I have the absolute pleasure of attending and opening the SACWA Spencer Group Day on Monday, which includes 6 SACWA branches on Yorke Peninsula from Yorketown to Moonta.

Many of you I’ve worked with before, and now we’re all viewing our place in the community through different perspectives and roles.
And to those I’m working with for the first time… I completely understand you thinking, “she’s a little different” 😆

You’ll find these teams in our offices and out in the community, bringing their skills, dedication, and passion to the work they do every day.

Elected Members, administrators and community working together … drawing on experience from both inside and outside the Chamber … creates the strongest foundation for the best outcomes across our whole region.

✴️ A new chapter for Yorke Peninsula and the wider Narungga region ✴️

Today marked an important milestone as Chantelle Thomas MP - Member for Narungga was officially sworn in at Parliament House, taking her seat to represent our community.

Effective, results-driven relationships between Councils and the State are critical to ensuring our regions are not just heard, but delivered for. An MP who is accessible, engaged, and a strong advocate for our needs will be key to driving real outcomes.

I’d like to personally welcome Chantelle and I look forward to working closely together to secure positive, practical outcomes for Yorke Peninsula and our wider community.

We have already discussed several priority issues requiring immediate advocacy. Now that she has been formally sworn in, we will align our schedules to progress in our discussions.

Thank you for your patience as Chantelle and her team settle into the role.

Last week was not the time for an educational piece on legislation, process, or relationships with the State Government, I appreciate your patience in awaiting this post.

I welcome your questions in relation to Council processes, I agree, they do not always make sense and I am always happy to have a discussion with anyone seeking to understand more about Local Government.

The Special Council Meeting to discuss the item: South Australian Jetty Renewal Program Funding – Ardrossan and Edithburgh Jetties, will now be held on Wednesday, 6 May 2026 at 5.30pm
