For many years the chandeliers from the Town Hall ballroom were thought to have “disappeared” from storage. However, in 1950 some of the crystals were discovered in a vault and over the next 15 years more of the crystals were located and catalogued.

Experts brought it said it would be difficult to rebuild the chandeliers so in 1963 the remnants were offered for sale until the Tasmanian Museum stepped in and took hold of them until 1986 when then Lord Mayor Doone Kennedy led a campaign to have them restored for the 150th anniversary of Hobart becoming a City, in 1992.

The 1970s was a decade of protest and the Town Hall was the scene of many of them. In 1972 in response to the proposal to dam Lake Pedder, the United Tasmania Group political party was formed at the Town Hall in a fiery meeting.

As the Mercury reported: "A committee to select candidates was elected at a standing room only and sometimes stormy public meeting in the Hobart Town Hall last night. The coalition of candidates will contest the election on behalf of the United Tasmania Group. A large contingent of HEC [Hydro-Electric Commission] engineers attended last night’s meeting and frequently clashed verbally with members of the audience. An HEC employee allowed to put his case from the stage was constantly interrupted, hissed, shouted down, and finally slow clapped off the stage after his allotted time had run out".

Citizenship ceremonies in the Town Hall began in 1953 with the Lord Mayor officiating. Before that naturalisation occurred in police buildings or by a police magistrate within the Town Hall.

The 1953 ceremony happened in the same week that the first such ceremony in Australia was held in the Melbourne Town Hall.

During the 1967 fires, which saw the loss of 62 lives and 408 buildings, the Hobart Town Hall became an emergency centre for people who had lost their homes and the City Hall the first point for casualties.

Next year marks the 50 year anniversary of the fires and the City of Hobart is supporting the efforts of the Tasmania Fire Service to remember the lives and homes lost.

In 1961 a fountain carved by convict stonemason LR Paterson, which had been rescued from the New Market site in Macquarie St in the late nineteenth century, was placed in the garden behind the Hobart Town Hall.

It was already dilapidated when it was placed there and didn't last long before it had to be removed to make room for a new office block. It now sits in the University Rose Garden on the Domain.

She was greeted by Lord Mayor Sir Richard Harris as well as Hobart’s first female alderman, Dame Mabel Miller, who went on to become the first woman to represent Australia at the United Nations.
