This little Green Rosella was returned to the exact location of his family. After 2weeks post concussion care he was eager to go and find them, flying strongly and calling softly from the tallest gums when we left him to get on with his life 😊

Dear Hobart City Council. Provide us with a permit to kill 91 nesting and foraging trees for the critically endangered swift parrot inside a public, protected, bushland reserve. That's what this DA is asking the Hobart City Council to do. This will be a turning point for "tourism" in this State. This is madness. Tourism Industry Council Tasmania Discover Tasmania

And..as if that wasnt enough crap for one day, we had a visit from a Tiger Snake!
Well, by default.. our Striated Pardelote neighbours were the hosts and their little babies were afternoon tea πŸ˜‘
All a bit too close to home for my liking. After playing β€˜peek-a-boo for an hour or so, we gave up surveillance , installed a solid draught excluder at the back door and tried to pretend our life was normal!

Yesterday was hard. Nature doesnt have β€˜bad’ days...for her, all days are β€˜business as usual’!
For me it began with the unusual sight of both Dusky Robin parents perched on the nest, peering in and tweeking at something. Separately they often did this to make sure William ate all his bugs ..(escaped food is a waste of energy) .
Some time later, I popped the phone over the rim for a daily record if his progress..
he didnt look well.
He was in fact dead. A victim of blood sucking parasites that are programmed to hatch when babies are lovely and plump 😞.
Little red marks on his beak showed where the parents had tried to revive him , but no doubt they knew it was a race against time to get him fledged and out of the nest . They perhaps have these
bugs amongst their feathers, but control them with dust & water baths and preening.
I took a video of the little suckers running from William onto my hand but it wont load.. typical..

I cant get over how fast this youngster is growing. Wild reared is always faster and better than captive, of course..Mum Robin stands on the rim of the nest a lot now, re-offering insects that baby drops.
Im fighting the temptation to stuff the swallows in there and run!😝

Preening is always a good sign 😊
These 3 little Welcome Swallows plumetted (complete with nest) in the high winds yesterday. Luckily for them the property owner discovered them before they became afternoon tea for some passing opportunist. Although the nest was quickly replaced with some carpentry and a flower pot..the parents werent impressed and did not return πŸ˜‘
So..their journey in care begins; for the moment they are warm and full. The race is on however to prepare them in time for migration and add them back to their local colony πŸ₯°

Pls welcome Robin William. Named after my fav actor and special because it shares a birthday with Jesus 😍

So, the egg and nest are in a high traffic area of my back porch. Right next to the gate that we use many many times a day.
We netted the imediate area and waited to see if she would stay or if indeed Dad Robin would encourage this weird choice of nest site...well they did, he visits regularly with bugs and between them they sing joyfully at each reunion πŸ₯°
Today I have watched her stand and inspect her egg and sing to it softly. Im wondering if her chick is pipping 😝

Hi people,
A Dusky Robin decided to take control of 2020 by getting off to an early start for 2021. She built a beautiful nest in my flowerpot and layed a wonderful egg on Christmas Morning. 😊

The bees are up gathering pollen before the heat sets it. Please make sure you have a dish of water in your garden with pebbles to land on safely. Many bees drown in bird baths πŸ˜’πŸ€ŽπŸ’›

Back out in some of the elements..the aviary is sheltered and there is little draft through the timber walls. I should probably confess to the hottie bottles under the red towel...well Neika is between kunanyi’s cold feet β˜ƒοΈπŸ’™πŸ’™.
Plenty of time to brave the cold once those pin feathers have erupted 😍
