🚒👨‍🚒🤝 If you see an increased presence of firefighters on the Hobart waterfront today, don’t be alarmed – it’s part of a planned training exercise.

Trainees in our Firefighter Development Program are being put through their paces in two separate exercises involving simulated fires on board vessels.

These exercises provide valuable training and enhance our firefighter skills so we can keep the public safe in an emergency.

Exercises will be conducted around Kings Pier and Macquarie Wharf No.1.

Yesterday, volunteers and staff from across Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania SES took part in Tasmania’s Fire and Emergency Services State Conference in Hobart.

It was a great opportunity for networking, to hear the latest in emergency services management and was a fantastic professional development opportunity for our members.

It was also a chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of SES in Tasmania.

Through floods and fires, storms and searches over the past 50 years, Tasmanians have been putting their trust in the State Emergency Service during their time of need.

Often working in hazardous and unpredictable conditions, our SES members have demonstrated professionalism, adaptability, and courage.

Their actions have not only saved lives but have also helped communities endure and recover from some of the most challenging events in Tasmania’s history.

We'd like to take the opportunity to thank the conference organisers as well as the staff and volunteers who attended. We hope everyone had a great day 🚒🦺💪

If you see fire trucks and firefighters at the Launceston General Hospital tonight (Wednesday, 27 May) between 7.30pm and 9pm - please don't be alarmed, it's planned training.

Training exercises like this are a valuable opportunity for Tasmania Fire Service and Launceston General Hospital staff to work together to test emergency response capabilities.

Patients, staff and visitors will continue to be able to access the hospital as normal. However, we kindly ask that members of the community don’t attend the area with the sole purpose of observing our training.

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system in communities across Australia, and Launceston, Tasmania has been chosen as a test location.

Around 11 am on Monday 15 June 2026 if you are in or around Launceston, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The AusAlert test in your area is a Priority Alert. It will vibrate and include a loud siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds. If receiving the test could disrupt you or cause you or someone you know to feel unsafe, visit the AusAlert website at ausalert.gov.au to find out how to turn a Priority Alert off on your device.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

To learn what an AusAlert sounds like, visit ausalert.gov.au

🚨 What are false fire alarms? 🚨
They occur when an automatic fire alarm activates for reasons other than fire.

🧑‍🚒 Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) responds to around 4,500 false alarms per year - more than 12 per day!
🏢 Building owners and the community play a key role in preventing false alarms.
🚒 False alarms divert emergency resources, delaying response to real emergencies.
