Each week, Kelvin Smith brings joy to Bethlehem House with his incredible piano playing — spending time with our residents and filling the space with music, laughter, and connection.

Kelvin is well known across Tasmania for using his talent to raise awareness and funds for important causes, and thanks to his support, we were lucky enough to receive the donation of a beautiful grand piano for our residents to enjoy.

Bethlehem House provides vital accommodation and support for men experiencing or at risk of homelessness. With the generosity and kindness of people like Kelvin, we’re helping men rebuild confidence, stability, and hope for the future.

Thank you, Kelvin, for sharing your gift and your heart with our community.

One of our favourite spaces at Bethlehem House is our on-site workshop. It’s more than just a place to build or repair — it’s where residents connect with each other, stay active, and learn practical new skills.

Through our employability program, residents gain hands-on experience that can help open doors to future employment opportunities — while boosting confidence and wellbeing along the way.

It’s amazing what can be built when people are given the chance to learn, create and grow.

Some of our residents recently spent the day painting colourful planter pots to be installed at the St Vincent de Paul Society’s new Mill Lane Precinct — and what an amazing job they did!

They returned proud of their work, motivated, and already offering to come back and help with more projects.

Keeping our residents active, engaged, and connected is an important part of supporting their mental health and wellbeing. At Bethlehem House, weekly activities — along with our workshop, garden, and shared spaces — provide plenty of opportunities for creativity, purpose, and community connection.

A big thank you to everyone involved for helping make Mill Lane a brighter place!

This week is Mental Health Week, and this year’s theme is "Appreciate the Little Things."

Through our various support services, the St Vincent de Paul Society sees first-hand the effect someone’s mental health can have on their situation. Mental health services are a vital part of keeping people safe and off the streets.

This week serves as an opportunity to engage in activities that promote mental health and wellbeing and increase understanding around mental illness and its impact on those doing it tough. We encourage you to “Appreciate the Little Things” this week and take time to bring positivity into your life and the lives of those around you.

Bethlehem House in Hobart provides transitional and supported accommodation for men experiencing homelessness. For the past 53 years the St Vincent de Paul Society have run Bethlehem House and now provide accommodation and support for up to 76 men across two locations.

Bethlehem House is a lot more than a bed and a meal. We help these men get back on their feet, learn new skills and connect them with other services offered in Hobart so they can change their lives for the better.

Bethlehem House is excited to share a significant new donation that will enhance its workshop facilities and the experiences of residents.

Through the generosity of the Vinnies Central Men’s Shed, Bethlehem House was offered woodworking equipment that had been donated via a deceased estate.

Bethlehem House received two Triton workbenches, accompanied by a variety of accessories, a 300mm thicknesser, a wood lathe, a heat gun, an electric drill, a large benchtop belt sander, work horses, a toolbox and timber offcuts.

The Bethlehem House team would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Clinton Luckock, Pat Flannigan, and the Vinnies Central Men’s Shed for their generosity.

This donation will significantly enhance the Bethlehem House workshop, furthering their mission of providing skills development, meaningful activities and a sense of accomplishment for residents.

Last month we had the pleasure of inviting Angela Holzberger, Rotary Club of North Hobart president, and members to join us for lunch to thank them for the custom-made breakfast bench they built for our Murray Street building. The residents were previously using dining tables to make their breakfast, which was too low and deep to be comfortable.

The Rotary members spoke to staff and residents to design a new bench to meet their needs. We are all so grateful for the work they did and the amazing piece they made for us.

Thank you, Rotary Club of North Hobart!
