Sewage is spilling into the River Derwent after a waste treatment plant near Berridale in Hobart’s northern suburbs “failed” overnight.

A public health warning has been issued, urging people to avoid swimming in the river from Austins Ferry to Sandy Bay.

The EPA and TasWater are working to fix the issue, but say the swimming ban will be in place until safety is confirmed.

“Sewage in water used for recreational activities like swimming poses a risk to health from viruses and bacteria,” Public Health Director Dr Mark Veitch said.

“These risks can include gastroenteritis (diarrhoea or vomiting) and infections of the skin, ears or eyes.”
