For 18 years, the SGT Locke Memorial Charity Match has united communities through sport and service.

SGT Matthew Locke MG, a decorated Special Air Service Regiment soldier killed in Afghanistan in 2007, exemplified the finest traditions of the Australian Army.

In his home town of Bellingen, 45 ADF personnel from 29 units took part in a full week of school visits, community engagement, and rugby league, with support from 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment , Coffs Harbour.

Nine matches led to the headline Army Women’s and Men’s clashes against Sawtell A Grade, watched by over 1,500 supporters. Together, the community raised more than $36,000 for charity.

Honouring our heroes.

On 25 June 1916, 5th Brigade soldier PTE William Jackson and forty others assaulted German lines.

After capturing an enemy combatant, PTE Jackson learned that his comrades had come under intense shell and gunfire.

Journeying back to no man’s land, he helped a wounded soldier return to Australian lines. He made his way yet again to no man’s land, where he lost his right arm as he was rendering assistance to a wounded Australian soldier.

Despite his injury, he helped his comrade back. With an impromptu tourniquet placed on his arm, he left for no man’s land for a third time to ensure no one was left behind.

He was 18 years old.

PTE William Jackson was awarded the Victoria Cross.

The 12 Australian soldiers charged an enemy force of between 80 to 100 men with fixed bayonets, killing and wounding some 30 enemy soldiers and capturing another 50.

Following a promotion, Captain Storkey was awarded a Victoria Cross for his courage and skill.
