From 20–23 November, 93 members of 5 CSSB deployed with 40 vehicles on a long-distance convoy through regional NSW as part of Exercise Gecko Roam.

This activity prepared junior leaders and soldiers to effectively conduct CSS operations over long distances, providing a valuable opportunity for junior leaders to plan and execute CSS operations in a domestic environment.

The convoy travelled through the NSW Riverina and Central West regions, overnighting at Gaza Ridge Barracks, Bandiana and Peak Hill Showground.

Key highlights:
βœ… Development of kerbside refueling capability
βœ… Development of bulk water replenishment capability
βœ… Heavy vehicle and specialist capabilities exercised, including:
β€’ Heavy plant trailer with MHE
β€’ HX81 with 45ft cargo trailer
β€’ 42M recovery asset (executing a real-time recovery)
βœ… Junior leaders rehearsed vehicle-mounted radio communications and implemented effective control measures over long distances

This activity provided significant β€˜time on the tools’, improving driver-operator skillsets and confidence in operating vehicles outside of a Defence Training Area.

Exercises like Gecko Roam ensure 5 CSSB remains mission-ready, capable of sustaining operations anywhere, anytime.

Clinical Observation on the Slopes – Supporting Communities in Unique Environments

Congratulations to Warrant Officer Class Two Christopher Atkins on completing his clinical observation placement with Perisher Ski Patrol! This unique opportunity allowed WO2 Atkins to observe and learn from experienced first responders in a fast-paced alpine setting.

From managing on-slope injuries to understanding the challenges of remote emergency care, this placement offered valuable insight into delivering medical support in a dynamic and unpredictable environment.

Thank you to Perisher Ski Patrol for welcoming our personnel and sharing your expertise. Experiences like these help build capability, strengthen community ties, and prepare our people for diverse operational settings.

❄️⛑️ Training doesn’t always happen in a clinic – sometimes, it happens on the mountain.

5 CSSB Celebrates Employer Support at NSW Awards Night

Members of 5th Combat Service Support Battalion (5 CSSB) were proud to attend the recent NSW Employer Support Awards, hosted by ADF Reserves and Employer Support at the Royal Automobile Club of Australia.

It was a fantastic evening shared with our civilian employers, recognising the vital role they play in supporting our reservists. Guests were treated to great company, meaningful stories and lively entertainment from the talented Lancer Band 🎢.

πŸ† Congratulations to LCPL Elisha McMorrow and her employer, Female First Physiotherapy, for taking out the Private Sector – Small Business Award!

πŸ‘ Honourable Mentions were also awarded to:
- LCPL Karina Oakley and her employer Affinity Legal
- PTE Justin Snaidero and his employer De Bortoli Wines

The Employer Support Awards formally recognise civilian employers who go above and beyond to support their reservist employees – whether through sustained commitment or special efforts that enable members to fulfil their Reserve duties.

Thank you to all the employers who continue to stand behind our people in and out of uniform. Your support strengthens our Defence community.

Earlier this year 5 CSSB Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers came together at Holsworthy Barracks to conduct Professional Military Education and farewell MAJ James Kirkham. This activity provided the opportunity for 5 CSSB Officers and SNCOs from across NSW and the ACT to integrate, further their understanding of the current Defence Environment from a Strategic level and provided the opportunity to farewell MAJ Kirkham after 48 years of service.

A special thank you to the 5 CSSB cooks and other staff who catered and supported the Dinner, and congratulations to MAJ James Kirkham on his retirement.

On 15 Aug 25, 5 CSSB had the pleasure of partnering with Sydney University Regiment and the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway to clean Kokoda monuments and the gardens in preparation for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific, where we remember Australia’s efforts throughout 1942-45 in the Pacific Region.

In memory of this historic occasion, we were honoured to join Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley, the Governor of NSW, and many others at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway to lay a wreath in memory of all who served.

RSM 5 CSSB , WO1 Josh Nelson, RSM SUR, WO1 Racheal Sheppard and WO2 Jeremy Lowe had the special privilege of escorting WWII Veterans Reg Chard, Bruce Robertson and Allan Whichelo at the event.

Moments like this allow us to take time to remember those who fought on the front lines, those who have served on the home front, those who are still serving, and the families whose lives are forever changed.

Lest We Forget.
