NSW SES Strathfield Unit

NSW SES Strathfield Unit New South Wales State Emergency Service is the combat agency for floods, storms and tsunamis in NSW

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency and rescue service dedicated to assisting the community. The Strathfield unit of the NSW SES assists the local commuity within the Strathfield Local Area, as well as the wider community across NSW and Australia. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 228 units located throughout New South Wales. The units comprise of approximately 10

,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our major responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides the majority of general rescue effort in the rural parts of the state. This includes road accident rescue, vertical rescue, bush search and rescue, evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of NSW. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES also assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, the Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW.

Yesterday, we said our final goodbye to our former Unit Commander Darrin Parkin. The community meant a lot to Darrin with his service to Scouts NSW, 18 years with local goverment and over 20 years of service to the NSW SES.

Darrin officially joined NSW SES Canada Bay Unit in 1995 and held several roles including Trainer, Training Coordinator, Deputy Local Commander over the years and was appointed Unit Commander (formerly known as Unit Controller) of the Strathfield Unit in 2006.

During his time at Strathfield he was instrumental in growing the unit from 6 members to the 60 strong it is today. Darrin led the unit through difficult times as the unit head quarters burnt down, not once, but twice.

Throughout his time in the NSW SES, Darrin showed true leadership in developing the skills of his team, many of whom are still serving in leadership
roles in the SES in various unit, including Strathfield, or have been mentored and inspired to serve further in the NSW Ambulance Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, and the Australian Defence Force.

You will be sorely missed, but through the countless lives you have touched your memory and legacy will live on forever.

Our teams have been out over the weekend continuing to make safe the damage from storms in the area.

Thanks to our friends at Fire and Rescue NSW for their Bronto skylift enabling access to high unsafe trees.

For emergency assistance during a storm call NSW SES on 132 500. In a life threatening emergency call triple zero (000).

Today, five of our NSW SES Strathfield Unit volunteers received the National Emergency Medal for their service during the 2019 to 2020 Black Summer Bushfires.

Black Summer was one of the most intense and catastrophic fire seasons on record in Australia. It included a period of bushfires in many parts of Australia, which, due to its unusual intensity, size, duration, and uncontrollable dimension, was considered a megafire.

Collectively the Strathfield Unit also received a NSW SES Commissionerโ€™s Certificate of Appreciation for the role members played in support and protecting communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thank you all for your service.

Watch for These 10 Red Flags When Hiring Contractors

When hiring contractors, it's essential to be aware of potential scams and warning signs. Here are ten red flags to watch out for:

1. A Large Up-Front Deposit:
โ€ข Reputable contractors typically require a reasonable deposit but not a significant portion of the total cost upfront.

2. A Payment Schedule Based on Dates Instead of Milestones:
โ€ข Payments should be tied to project milestones, ensuring that work is completed before further payments are made.

3. A Low Overall Quote in Exchange for Advertising:
โ€ข Be wary of unusually low quotes in return for placing a sign on your property or other forms of advertising.

4. Lack of a Contractual Labour Agreement:
โ€ข Always insist on a written contract that outlines the scope of work, payment terms, and other important details.

5. Door-to-Door Sales Following Natural Disasters:
โ€ข Be cautious of contractors who show up unsolicited after a natural disaster, as they may be looking to take advantage of the situation.

6. Disappearing Roofers:
โ€ข Contractors who are hard to reach or suddenly disappear after receiving payment are a significant red flag.

7. Extra Pressure to โ€œAct Nowโ€:
โ€ข High-pressure tactics to sign a contract immediately or make a quick decision are often used by unscrupulous contractors.

8. A Price that Keeps Changing:
โ€ข Avoid contractors who constantly change their pricing without valid reasons or fail to provide a clear, fixed estimate.

9. Contractor Accepting Cash Only:
โ€ข Legitimate contractors usually accept various forms of payment. Insisting on cash-only transactions can indicate potential tax evasion or fraud.

10. Reduce Labour Time:
โ€ข Contractors who promise to complete the work in an unrealistically short timeframe may cut corners, leading to poor-quality work.

By being vigilant and recognizing these warning signs, you can better protect yourself from contractor scams and ensure a successful and trustworthy hiring process.
