👋 Get to know your Council: Greg Wallace, WHS & Depot Operations Office

After spending 17 years with the Department of Transport and Main Roads based in Cairns, Barcaldine and Roma, Greg moved back to Hope Vale and over the past two seasons had been engaged in seasonal work with a contractor road crew for the Cook Shire Council. An opportunity arose to work for the Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council, and Greg has accepted the position of WHS and Depot Operations Officer. He hopes that it will be a rewarding and mutually beneficial role.

As well as implementing workplace health and safety standards, he will also identify and organise training opportunities within the community for both Council staff and youth hoping to engage in employment with both the Council and the broader community.

I would like to thank the Hope Vale Community Justice Group for the privilege of speaking today as one of their invited guests on the important issue of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is everyone’s concern. It is everyone’s responsibility to speak up and report it, but as a Council, it is also our responsibility to address the bigger picture by supporting safer communities through better housing, employment opportunities, and access to health services.

Thank you again to the community for a beautiful morning and for continuing these important conversations together.

- Mayor Bruce Gibson

Every year in Australia, National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) encourages us to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to recommit to reconciliation and justice for First Nations People.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme is “All In,” reminding us that true reconciliation takes everyone working together. A strong community is built on understanding, respect, and walking together.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that needs all of us, and everyone plays a role.

26/05/2026

As we recognise Domestic Violence Prevention Month, I would like to pay my respects to all families who have been affected by the loss of loved ones through domestic violence. We acknowledge the pain and trauma that domestic violence causes and recognise that this behaviour is not right and has no place in our community or our culture.

Domestic violence has impacted our community here in Hope Vale, and we know these issues are real. As Mayor, I recently attended a session at our Cultural Park to help raise awareness and stand together against domestic violence.

As a Council, we are committed to addressing the underlying causes that contribute to domestic violence, including housing, health, economic development, and employment opportunities. Council continues to support and employ local Hope Vale people in positions suited to their skills and strengths, helping to build a stronger and healthier community.

I would also like to thank our community for coming together to recognise Domestic Violence Prevention Month. The domestic violence awareness barbecue held in the park last Thursday was a great success, and our community should be proud that we continue to stand together against domestic violence.

Together, we can create a safer and stronger Hope Vale for everyone.

Today, our community pauses to observe National Sorry Day.

This is a deeply significant day as we remember and acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors. We reflect on the past policies that separated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, and we honour the incredible resilience of our people.

Acknowledging our history is an important part of our collective healing. By standing together and understanding our past, we continue to build a strong, supportive, and safe environment for all our residents.
