🌊 A small crew, but plenty found! πŸ”

A big thank you to everyone who came down to Front Beach this morning for our Hopetoun Microplastic Search!

We had a pretty quiet turnout, but the small crew who did come along certainly made up for it! We collected plenty of tiny and small plastic fragments, along with bottles, rope, lids, nappies and all sorts of other rubbish and marine debris.

Our search was focused on microplastics, but we found plastic in all shapes and sizes, including lots of those smaller fragments that are already breaking down into even tinier pieces.

Winter might not be the most inviting time to spend a Sunday morning at the beach πŸ˜…, but the rougher weather and winter swells also wash plenty of marine debris onto our coastline, which gave us plenty to find!

The kids especially got right into it, sifting through the sand and discovering just how much plastic can be hiding on a beach that looks pretty clean at first glance.

πŸ‘€ Check out some of what we found!

🌊 We're back! New date announced! 🌊
Unfortunately, our original 11 July event had to be postponed due to wet weather, which wasn't suitable for a microplastic search. Wet sand makes it much harder to sift and spot the tiny plastics we're looking for.
πŸ“… Sunday, 23 August 2026
πŸ•˜ Registrations from 9.00am
πŸ“ Front Beach, Hopetoun
Join us for the Hopetoun Microplastic Searchβ€”a community event with a difference!
Instead of focusing on the larger rubbish we can easily see, we'll be searching for microplastics: tiny pieces of plastic that often go unnoticed, remain in our environment for decades, and are easily mistaken for food by marine life.
Please bring:
πŸ₯£ A sieve (if you have one)
πŸ«™ A jar or reusable container for collecting
Don't have a sieve? No worries! We've now got plenty available to borrow on the day. Just remember to bring your own collection container.
After your search:
βš–οΈ Bring your collection back to the weigh station.
🌭 Enjoy a free sausage sizzle (for registered participants).
🎟️ Every registered participant goes into the draw to win a prize!
🌿 Still feeling motivated?
After you've enjoyed a sausage sizzle, we'll have rubbish bags available if you'd like to continue your morning by collecting larger marine debris around Hopetoun. Every little bit helps!
β˜• Need to warm up afterwards?
Salty Sips will be open for coffee, hot chocolate and a bite to eat after the event.
Whether you stay for 20 minutes or the whole morning, we'd love to see you there. Come along, learn something new, enjoy a morning on the beach and help protect our coastline.
πŸ’™ See you at Front Beach!

🌊 Can you help us build Beach in a Box? 🐚

As part of Marine Week 2026, the Hopetoun Progress Association is creating a hands-on activity for students attending the Marine Week school program at Hopetoun Primary School.

πŸ” We're looking for interesting beach treasures to help create Beach in a Box – an interactive activity where students can explore and discover real items collected from our local coastline.

We're looking for donations of items such as:

🐚 Shells (all shapes and sizes)
πŸ¦€ Crab shells or claws
🦈 Shark egg cases (Mermaid's Purses)
πŸ¦‘ Cuttlebones
🧽 Sea sponges
🌿 Dried seaweed or seagrass
🌳 Driftwood
πŸͺ¨ Interesting rocks or sea glass
πŸͺΆ Feathers found along the beach
🎣 Old fishing rope, floats or netting (clean and safe)
♻️ Bottle lids, nurdles or other clean plastic found on the beach
🐟 Fish bones or any other interesting natural beach finds

πŸ“ Donations can be dropped into the HPA Office during office hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If those times aren't suitable, send us a message on Facebook and we'll arrange another time.

πŸ“… If possible, we'd love to receive all donations by Wednesday 19 August so we have time to prepare the activity before Marine Week.

πŸ’™ Thank you for helping us create a unique, hands-on experience for almost 200 local students during Marine Week!
