Whilst I understand the situation from a personal point-of-view (some of my own family being involved/empolyed in the education 'industry') ... It's all very well for teachers to cry 'poor' but I challenge ALL teachers to have the courage to inform a nieve public what 'education workers' ACTUALLY get paid and for EXACTLY how many hours of work, both during and after 'class-time'.
MOST people in employment are required to put in extra work that is not 'official time' and have to pay for things out of their own pockets to help them keep their employment (which, incidently, can usually be claimed as a tax deduction). The majority of people (especially those in 'professional positions' get paid for a position/job, NOT on the basis of x number of hours worked, but by what it takes to get the job DONE - and VERY few jobs have ANY guarantee of employment and definitely do not have any guarantee of continuation - Just look at Australia's car industry, etc ... This is the way the 'real world' works!
As far as 'paying for materials out your own pocket' ... If there is no budget (or insufficient) then raise the money in other ways, apply or increase 'course fees' as required for that particular subject/course, hold a fete, conduct raffles, seek community help, ask manufacturers and companies to assist, etc. - It's been done before ... there ARE other options ... That's the way we did it in 'our time' !
The fact is ... YES ... It IS a changing world, yet there would be a LOT of people staggered by how 'badly done by' teachers are NOT -- I guess it would be hard for some people to live on a mere $57,000 and $92,000 per year (that's MORE than most fire-fighters and paramedics) and as for a Pricipal's salary, WELL, that's even MORE ...
WAKE UP PUBLIC ... This is, primarily, a political issue and you're being misled - BIGTIME !!
