🌧️ WHEN TO CALL SES DURING A STORM OR FLOOD 🌧️

During storms and flood events, volunteers from the Gisborne unit respond to requests for assistance right across our community. Knowing when to contact us helps ensure crews can prioritise jobs and get help where it’s needed most.

✅ Call SES on 132 500 for assistance with:
• Storm or wind damage to your home or property
• Roof damage or leaking roofs
• Fallen trees or branches causing damage or preventing you from leaving/entering your property
• Flooding impacting your property

🚨 Call Triple Zero (000) if the situation is life-threatening, including:
• Someone trapped or injured
• Rising floodwater posing immediate danger
• Electrical hazards or emergencies

Please DO NOT request assistance via social media or email. These platforms are not monitored 24/7, particularly during severe weather events, and your request may not be seen in time.

Did you spot our visiting taskforce touring around Horsham this afternoon?
19 volunteers from across the State have come to Horsham to support SES Horsham Unit with local response for the next little while as we monitor the rainfall and watch our beautiful rivers.
Some of the Horsham volunteers took the crew for a tour to show them some key points including boat ramps for access and the Horsham weir.

With the current weather situation we have had some questions about sandbags from people planning for the rain expected today and tomorrow.

If you feel you need sandbags, we encourage you to source these from your local hardware store - at this stage there are no plans for our unit to become a sandbag distribution point.

At an absolute pinch, reusable shopping bags and dirt from the garden can be helpful.

If you do feel the need for sandbagging, this guide might be helpful. Remember, you don't need to build a fortress, just protect low lying entry points. Also, don't overfill the bags.

You can make other preparations such as cleaning gutters, moving or tying down outdoor furniture and trampolines and maybe emptying some water out of the pool.

Take care on the roads - avoid driving in heavy rain if possible - and never try to drive in flood water.

A huge thanks to the Horsham Aquatic Centre for always allowing us to run our swim tests and Swift Water and other marine training sessions. We appreciate working with us at short notice and supporting us in ensuring valuable and highly skilled training is delivered to our members at the highest standards.

Tonights training is a search and carry out at the Horsham Police Paddock.
Nights like tonight ensure our members are working well as a team, keeping their skills honed and chatting to locals about what we are doing while we are out and about.

Horsham SES were glad to assist Victoria Police to help out this gentleman. It was all hands on deck to retrieve the very stuck gopher after making sure the rider was safe and being looked after by Ambulance Victoria. 💪🚨🚓

Last month, an 82-year-old man was heading to his secret fishing spot on the Wimmera River in Horsham, when his mobility scooter’s brakes failed and he and the scooter ended up in the river.

He wasn’t able to get out himself, but luckily, he flagged down a passer-by who called 000.

Constable Salisbury and Constable McDonough were first on scene and didn't hesitate to get wet and help the man out of the water.

Additional members arrived providing first aid before Ambulance Victoria turned up.

Horsham SES then showed up, and with a bit of teamwork, they managed to get the scooter out of the water too.

Each year Horsham Unit holds an annual dinner. 🍴🍛
This year was no different. This event is an opportunity to relax and wind down with our families and say thankyou to those who support at home so our fabulous volunteers can do what they do. 💪
📜Tonight saw awards handed out for years of service, certificates of attainment, presentation of the recently released Flood and Storm Pins.
And the unit controller also presented the Horsham Unit Encouragement Award. 🪙This award is given to members who have made an outstanding contribution to the Horsham Unit as voted by their peers.
Well done to all the recipients. 👏👏
