After HPHS I finished a Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry, and while I was still studying I landed a paid 12 month internship with the National Measurement Institute, a federal government lab. I ended up published out of that work, including research on detecting adulterants in honey. Since then I've worked in a few accredited labs, and I'm now the Laboratory Supervisor at Hy-Tec, running concrete testing for construction projects around Sydney with a team under me.
HPHS had a lot to do with it. The science team were dedicated and made sure we actually got hands on with practical work, which is what made me want to be in a lab in the first place. The peer support program taught me how to express myself and gave me my first go at leadership, which is exactly what I use now.
Honestly, the teachers and support there put me on a path I never thought was open to me. I'm proud of the work I've done, and I think it says something about what students from our area can achieve when they're backed properly.
