For Anna Bethel, the Country Universities Centre (CUC) Hughenden has helped her separate study and home life as she completes a Bachelor of Education through CQUniversity, while working at Prairie State School part-time and raising two young girls with her husband on a station.

โ€œWhen you are studying externally, particularly with children, work and other commitments, there are always distractions at home,โ€ said Anna.

โ€œGoing to the CUC means I can set aside a block of time where university is my priority.โ€

Funded by the Australian Government and industry partner Powerlink, Country Universities Centre (CUC) Hughenden is a dedicated learning and study space for students pursuing further education in the Flinders Shire.

Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle said there had been strong demand in the first year, with 41 students currently enrolled โ€“ well above initial projections โ€“ and studying a diverse range of qualifications, including university degrees, vocational education, trade apprenticeships and professional development courses.

โ€œThe greatest achievement has been providing local people with access to tertiary education and training without needing to leave the Flinders Shire,โ€ said Mayor Peddle.

โ€œMany of our students are the first in their family to undertake tertiary study, while others are mature-aged learners balancing employment, family responsibilities and community commitments.

โ€œThe Centre provides a quiet, supportive and welcoming environment where students can focus on their studies while remaining connected to their community.โ€
