Visit Hughenden Accredited Visitor Information Centre housing a fantastic Dinosaur Display and Museum in Hughenden, Outback Queensland.

Our Visitor Centre will remain open for operation during this time period.nders Discovery Centre houses an amazing exhibition of fossils and gems from around the world, as well as an extensive and growing display of fossils from the local area. "Hughie" is the star attraction; a life size replica of the Muttaburrasaurus. When you not only will you visit the dinosaurs, you will be greeted by an ever-changing landscape of savanna plains and deep gorges. From flowing grassland plains along the Flinders River to the rich black soil basalt country in the north, Hughenden and surrounds offers you the type of Outback holiday you are looking for! The Centre is a booking agent for Travel Train, REX and Queensland Parks and have an extensive range of information on many destinations. We look forward to seeing you in the Flinders Shire soon.

🌳 DID YOU KNOW?

There’s a tree in Hughenden with a story dating back to one of Australia’s most famous and tragic expeditions – the 1860 Burke and Wills expedition.

Near the Hughenden Showgrounds, this historic Coolabah Tree was marked by two relief expeditions searching for the explorers. Their journeys ultimately revealed the fertility and wealth of the plains along the Flinders River.

Today, the tree is preserved as a memorial to the brave explorers who travelled this land. 🌿

Bingo! But make it art 🎨

From colourful murals and larger-than-life sculptures to artworks that tell stories of the region, Hughenden’s art scene is full of surprises.

Keep an eye out as you explore town – including Moonda Nurra, the stunning rainbow serpent sculpture inspired by Dreamtime stories and a powerful symbol of Indigenous culture.

📣👀 A little update to our opening hours!

As we head into the off-season, the Flinders Discovery Centre has made a couple of small changes to its opening hours, effective until March next year.

🕘 The NEW opening hours are:
Monday to Friday: 9.00 am – 4.30 pm
Saturday: 9.00 am – 1.00 pm
Sunday: Closed

Meet Sarah, one of our fantastic librarians at Hughenden Library! 📚

Sarah has been part of the local library community for three years. And when she’s not at the library helping locals discover their next great read, Sarah enjoys spending her spare time walking her dogs around the lake.

The library is more than just books – it’s a welcoming space for the whole family, with stories for all ages, cosy reading spots, a kids’ play area, book club and plenty of community events.

Take advantage of the Outback's open skies and little light pollution, where wispy galaxies, bright stars and a planet are waiting to be seen. Just look up...and follow these simple tips for a successful stargazing session:

🌌 Find a dark place to settle in, facing away from town lights
🔴 Use a red light instead of a white light to protect your night vision
📱 Try a stargazing app to identify what’s above you
🛋️ Get comfortable and give your eyes time to adjust
