𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 📖🖊

Some of the most important parts of our history aren't found in books or archives.

They're found around kitchen tables, on station verandas, at community gatherings and in the memories of the people who lived it.

Flinders Shire Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from local residents to be part of the Hughenden Historical Project, a community storytelling initiative funded through the Age Friendly Community Development Grants Program.

Selected participants will have the opportunity to share their memories and experiences for inclusion in a new publication:

📖 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙒𝙚 𝘼𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙇𝙤𝙨𝙩: 𝙑𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨

We are looking for stories about:

✅ Life on the land
✅ Family and community life
✅ Local businesses and industries
✅ Droughts, floods and challenges overcome
✅ School days and growing up in the district
✅ Local characters and memorable moments
✅ The changes you've witnessed over the years

No story is too small. Whether your memories are of family life, station life, local businesses, community events or growing up in the district, we'd love to hear from you.

Professional memoir writer Natalie Stockdale will be in Hughenden from 30 November to 4 December 2026, working with selected participants to capture and preserve their stories for inclusion in the publication.

Flinders Shire Council has continued to receive excellent feedback following its inaugural Health & Wellbeing Expo in Hughenden. The Expo brought together health providers and community organisations to showcase the support available to residents and encourage greater connection between community members and service providers.

Lee Howell was on hand from UnitingCare’s North Queensland Rural Family Support Service (NQRFSS). Through the service, rural families can access outreach and connection, creating the trust that helps them feel safe and supported.

Great news for Community Care clients receiving personal care services through the Support at Home program.

From 1 October 2026, clients no longer pay a contribution fee for personal care services. These services are now fully funded by the Australian Government, reducing out-of-pocket costs for eligible clients.

Over the coming weeks, our Community Care team will be contacting clients to arrange a visit and discuss what this change means for them. We will work with you to review and sign updated service agreements and budgets, ensuring you understand the positive impact these changes may have on your individual circumstances.

In the meantime, please note that this change will be reflected in your October invoices and statements. Clients receiving personal care services under Support at Home will no longer see a contribution fee charged for these services from 1 October 2026.

The heart of North West Queensland will come alive once again when the Festival of Outback Skies returns to Hughenden from 30 April to 2 May 2027. The Festival will welcome locals, travellers, performers, artists, families and businesses for three unforgettable days celebrating outback culture, creativity, connection and country hospitality under Hughenden's iconic skies 🌆

Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle has encouraged everyone to mark the dates in their calendars and start planning their 2027 outback adventure.
