After several false starts, the formal Deed of Transition between the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association Inc. and Marine Rescue Queensland, through the Queensland Police Service, has now been signed.

The signed Deed clears the path for Tully Coast Guard to commence its transition from AVCGA over to MRQ. We are currently scheduled to commence transition in October with full transition to be achieved by 30 December 2026.

One of the first milestones as part of this transition is the formal commissioning and Naming ceremony for our new Vessel, TU21. Festivities will take place this Saturday 4 July 2026 commencing at 4:30 pm where the vessel will be formally named Jim McQuillan in recognition of the contribution of one of our founders and first Commander Jim McQuillan.

After the naming ceremony we will be having our traditional Tully Coast Guard Fish & Chip night commencing from 5pm with food from 5:30pm.

We encourage our community to come and attend one or both of these events.

On the weekend we went out and replaced the wave buoy off the south east corner of Dunk Island as the battery on the existing one had died.

We had installed the original wave buoy for the Government Hydraulcs Laboratory in Brisbane who are collecting wind and wave data for research, particularly in relation to cyclones.

They are generously making this data available to the local marine community.

Good Friday was indeed a good day for Tully Coast Guard as our new vessel had its first official outing, and it was an interesting one.
We were tasked by the Cairns Water Police to board an unmanned drifting vessel, in this case a large steel trawler, and attempt to improve the anchoring by letting out more chain.

It was a very rough trip down to the Cardwell but the new vessel did exceptionally well and the double chine design worked like a shock absorber.

Fortunately, the wind dropped once we arrived which made it safe enough for Don and Dan to board the vessel and see what they could do. They were able to release the second anchor and some chain which should help reduce the drifting.

As soon as our two intrepid crew members got back on the boat the wind picked up leading to another fun trip back to the base.

We took photos and sent them to the Cairns Water Police who forwarded them on to Maritime Safety Queensland who are responsible for dealing with drifting unmanned vessels.

All in all, a very interesting first outing for TU21 and the crew.

The Tully Coast Guard extends a big thank you to Reeds Beta Tully for their generous donation of $150 towards the new freezer for the base. Thanks Raymond for great service with a smile. Our new freezer is up and running. The familiar background is the Mary Liddle, now sharing the shed with the new boat, but she is still the active rescue boat.

The Tully Coast Guard extends a big thank you to Teitzel's Tully IGA for their generous donation of $600 from their Xmas fund. This is going towards the many transition costs as we change over to the new boat. There is a lot of training and setup before the new boat is out of the shed, and hard at work giving us a view behind doing what it was built for...
