Be mindful at the beaches, we’re still getting dangerous jelly fish.
Today during a routine stinger drag, patrol 3 netted a 17cm box jellyfish (chironex fleckeri) outside the southern side of the stinger net enclosure. This is a deadly box jellyfish with tentacles that stretch as long as 2 metres. A sting by one this size is fatal.
This is a timely reminder especially as we go into Easter holidays to always swim inside the stinger net and wear protective clothing or a lycra stinger suit when swimming. We are still in stinger season and while it draws to a close beach goers must not be complacent.
“No swimming”🚫signs have been erected outside the net as reminders to not swim outside the net. On beautiful days like today the water is inviting but it’s also perefect conditions for box jellyfish. So always swim inside the enclosure. We can still enjoy our beach while being safe.
