The success of this project relies on strong participation from local businesses. All business owners or managers within the Inverell Shire LGA are being asked to participate.

Following analysis of the data, Council will prepare a report outlining the overall findings and recommendations from the survey. Any personal information provided will remain commercial in confidence and will not be included in the report.

Inverell Shire Council has invested in an artificial intelligence-driven road inspection system to improve the efficiency and accuracy of defect detection across the Shire’s extensive road network.

Council is responsible for managing 2,254 kilometres of roads across an area of more than 9,400 square kilometres. Road infrastructure is one of the community’s most critical public assets. The technology is expected to streamline inspection processes, support more proactive maintenance and improve safety outcomes for road users.

Following an assessment of available systems, Council has acquired the Road Vision Pro platform, supplied by Retina Visions, for a 12-month trial at a cost of $30,000 funded within the existing asset management budget. The AI-powered road inspection and asset intelligence platform, uses vehicle-mounted hardware to automatically detect road defects, assess road condition and assist with determining maintenance priorities. The system operates continuously when a vehicle is in use, enabling ongoing monitoring without disrupting other staff activities.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight said the investment reflected Council’s commitment to using practical technology to better manage local infrastructure and improve community safety.

Mayor Dight stated, “By automating road inspections with this technology, Council will be better placed to identify defects earlier, plan maintenance more effectively and make informed decisions about how we manage our road assets”.

In addition to identifying defects on sealed and unsealed roads, the system can also detect issues affecting other infrastructure such as signage, line-marking and footpaths. It is also expected to assist disaster recovery processes by capturing pre and post-event asset conditions to support disaster recovery funding claims. The hardware can be easily transferable from different vehicles and even carried by staff.

Council aims to have the system operational by July 2026. A report will be delivered to Council following the trial period, detailing the systems performance and its operational fit for the organisation.

Inverell Shire Council is pleased to advise that the Inverell Mountain Bike Track has reopened following the successful reformation of the Inverell Mountain Bike Club Inc. and the ex*****on of a new licence agreement for the management of the facility.

At its Ordinary Meeting held on 27 May 2026, Council received and noted a report confirming that the Club had officially reformed following its Annual General Meeting on 6 May 2026. The outcome follows Council’s earlier decision in April to suspend the Expressions of Interest process to allow the community an opportunity to re-establish the Club and continue the long-standing community-led management of the facility.

Following a public meeting in April, community members resolved to hold an AGM to determine the future of the Club. The meeting, held at McDonald’s Inverell, resulted in the election of a new Executive Committee, comprising President Stewart Johnston, Vice President Dan Harmon, Secretary Jordan Daemon and Treasurer Manuel Meszaros.

Council was subsequently advised that the Club had commenced the process of re-affiliation with AusCycling to secure insurance coverage and had requested an updated licence agreement to enable the facility to reopen as soon as practicable. In accordance with Council’s resolution, the updated agreement was provided, signed and formally executed on 15 May 2026. Council also received the Club’s Public Liability Certificate of Currency. Subsequently, Council removed the locks from the pedestrian gate and the signage relating to the temporary closure.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight said the reformation of the Club represents a positive outcome for the community and for the future of a valued local recreational asset.

“Council welcomes the successful reformation of the Inverell Mountain Bike Club and congratulates the new executive on stepping forward to lead the organisation,” Cr Dight said.

“This is a strong example of the community working together to support the ongoing operation of an important local facility. Council is pleased to see the track reopen under a community-led model that helps preserve local knowledge and commitment to the sport.”

The reopening of the Inverell Mountain Bike Track delivers the best possible outcome for the community by supporting continued public access to the facility while enabling its care and operation to remain in the hands of a dedicated local organisation.

Inverell Shire Council is preparing a submission to the Draft New England North West Strategic Regional Integrated Transport.

The Draft Plan has been released by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) for community and stakeholder feedback and is intended to guide transport infrastructure, service planning and policy development across the region over the next 20 years. Council has previously advocated for stronger recognition of Inverell’s role as a major regional service centre and freight hub, with particular emphasis on the importance of the Gwydir Highway and associated freight routes, improved public and community transport, active transport infrastructure, safer pedestrian access and recognition of Inverell Airport as strategically important regional infrastructure.

Council’s draft submission acknowledges the positive strategic direction of the Draft Plan, including its focus on freight resilience, accessibility and active transport. However, it also raises concerns about the lack of clear delivery mechanisms, funding certainty and route-specific infrastructure commitments relevant to the Inverell Local Government Area. The submission will also note the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Inland Rail and the potential for continued pressure on regional and local road networks if freight remains heavily road dependent.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight said it was important that Inverell Shires needs were clearly reflected in the final regional transport plan.
“Transport planning decisions made now will help shape the future of our communities, industries and local economy for many years to come,” Mayor Dight said.

“Council wants to ensure the final plan properly recognises Inverell as a key regional service centre and freight hub, and that it includes practical commitments around road safety, freight efficiency, public transport access, active transport and investment in the infrastructure our communities rely on every day.”

Submissions on the Draft New England North West Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan close on Sunday 14 June 2026.

Inverell Shire Council has developed the 2026 Business Retention and Expansion Survey. The economic and social wellbeing of our community is closely linked to the strength and continued growth of local businesses. The survey has been designed to achieve the following objectives:

• Develop a current and accurate profile of the local economy.

Inverell Shire Council is pleased to announce the successful outcome of its application to the 2025/26 State Library of NSW Library Development Grants, securing $500,000 for the Inverell Library – Refresh & Renew Project.

This significant investment will deliver a comprehensive internal modernisation of the Inverell Library, ensuring the facility continues to meet the evolving needs and expectations of the community.

Manager Library Services, Sonya Wilkins, said the project represents an important step in the library’s long‑term development.

“Much of the library’s internal infrastructure is approaching 20 years of age. This grant allows us to modernise key elements such as shelving, furnishings and layout, creating a more flexible, welcoming and functional space for all users.”

The Inverell Library has undergone several expansions since its construction in 1965, with the last major renovation completed in 2007. The Refresh & Renew project responds to several identified needs, including worn and inflexible shelving, an outdated colour palette and layout, and strong community demand for improved quiet study areas, comfortable seating and more inviting public spaces. The successful installation of grant‑funded study booths in 2025 further demonstrated the value of modernised library spaces.

The project focuses on high‑impact, non‑structural improvements, including:

• Flexible Shelving: A modern, reconfigurable shelving system to support changing collection sizes and formats.
• Internal Reconfiguration: A redesigned floor plan to improve patron flow and maximise usable space.
• Circulation Desk Redesign: A smaller, more efficient service point to enhance interaction between staff and patrons.
• Refurbishment: New carpet and targeted painting to refresh the library’s appearance.
• Signage and Displays: Contemporary wayfinding and display solutions to highlight collection materials.

The updated aesthetic will complement the building’s original exposed red brickwork, incorporating calming greens and blues inspired by the natural environment.

Works are expected to occur over 12 to 18 months, with a short closure period anticipated during installation. Council will consider a pop‑up library service to maintain community access during this time. The project is scheduled for completion ahead of the 20th anniversary of the library’s last major renovation in November 2027.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight welcomed the announcement.

“This is an outstanding outcome for our community. The Inverell Library is one of our most valued public spaces, and this project will ensure it remains a vibrant, modern and accessible facility for many years to come. Council sincerely thanks the State Library of NSW for its support.”
