Be aware of rock fern in your paddocks 🌿

Rock Fern (Cheilanthes sieberi) is a native plant, but can be toxic to livestock if eaten in medium quantities.

While not especially palatable, livestock poisoning can occur during dry periods with low forage as stock seek green feed. Cattle appear to be more susceptible than sheep.

Rock fern is typically found in lighter soil regions, especially in and around rocks.

Look for:
🌿a short fern like looking plant, usually 15-30 cm in height
🌿small branching divided leaves, mostly less than 3cm wide
🌿fronds are crowded branching up from a low base
🌿the fronds have a distinctive fine, wire like, red - brown mid stem. Sometimes with fine white hairs, sometimes hairless.

Rock fern reproduces by spores. The small sori appear as black/brown dots on the underside of the leaf, when the sori burst they release tiny dust like spores.

Maintaining ground cover and soil fertility can assist other desirable species outcompete rock fern.

Avoid stressing livestock for three weeks after grazing rock fern. If poisoning does occur remove stock immediately. Poisoning symptoms may include weakness, staggering, blood in urine or bottling in the jaw. These symptoms are usually displayed over time rather than a quick onset, dependant of how much is ingested. If you have deaths or signs of toxicity, please contact your veterinarian or Local Land Services office for treatment advice.

For plant identification please reach out to your local agronomist or Local Land Services office on 1300 795 299.

Are you a sheep producer wanting to take advantage of your eID data? Make sure you've registered for our upcoming 'Data driven marketing and drought strategies' workshop in Inverell on 25 June.

Dr Jillian Kelly, Managing Director of AHN Consulting has a degree in veterinary science and a long career as both a private and District Veterinarian. She is experienced in drought feeding practices and supported over 1000 producers through the 2017-2020 drought. She is the 2024 SALRC Communications/Extension Professional of the Year winner and is currently running a research project in lamb feedlotting, with UNE and the SQNNSW Innovation Hub.

To complement the workshop's advice on using eID data to make management decisions, Jill will be running a practical and interactive session that takes complex science and turns it into useable in-the-paddock strategies to better feed your livestock.

Bring your feeding regime and your questions and go home feeling a little more prepared to tackle the dry winter ahead.

Has recent rainfall resulted in some new green pick on your place? 🌧️ 🌱

While conditions remain dry, even small amounts of rain combined with warm soil temperatures can trigger sudden pasture responses that may create livestock health risks.

Be aware of the potential for issues such as pulpy kidney, bloat and metabolic disorders when livestock transition suddenly from dry feed or grain-based rations onto green feed.

Fresh green pick can contain very high water content, often up to 90 per cent, which means stock may still require supplementary feeding even when paddocks begin to green up.

Are your livestock fit to load? 🚚

Transporting livestock is more than just moving animals from A to B, it’s also about ensuring they arrive in good condition without harm or unnecessary stress.

How do you know if an animal is fit for the intended journey? Before loading, check that your animals:
🐑 can walk unassisted and bear weight on all 4 legs
🐄 have no visible injuries, illness or distress
👀 are not blind in both eyes
🐮 are not heavily pregnant or too young for transport
💧 have had access to water, and dry feed if pregnant or lactating.

As always, if in doubt, leave them out.
