Students in 5/6 Platypus have launched into an exciting Term 2 with a rich and diverse learning program.

In English, they are working to add authority and detail to create quality informative texts, focusing on health technologies. They are also exploring podcasting and debating, developing their knowledge of effective persuasive devices through thoughtful and entertaining discussions such as whether primary students should have longer break times, building skills in persuasive speaking, reasoning, and teamwork.

In Maths, the class is immersed in fractions, consolidating and extending their knowledge on the many ways they can be compared, represented and manipulated.

In Science, lessons focus on human body systems and how they work together, sparking engaging and sometimes "gross" discoveries. This is complemented by a Technology project where students have taken on the role of Geoengineers, researching, designing and 3D printing climate solutions like solar reflectors and algae bioreactors, extending their science learning from last term into real world application.

In Music, lessons centre on the components of music and digital music-making, focusing on texture and dynamics.

Additionally, students are eagerly participating in the Opportunity Class Virtual Challenge, showing great agency by choosing to work independently or collaboratively on tasks such as catapult building, stop motion movies, writing relays, geo challenges, maths and music creation, and art and nature activities.

Keep up the great work Platypus!

Check out these wonderful moments of our young readers captivated by the story. 📖💫

Today our Talking Titans and Debating Dynamo teams began their Premiers Debating Challenge season against strong Valentine teams.
Our Talking Titans came away with a win and our Debating Dynamo team unfortunately lost. It was a great effort from all students with 5 of the 8 students debating today brand new to the competition.
A shoutout to our chairperson and timekeeper for making the debate possible too!
We can't wait for the next round; both teams will only get better!

A big day for members of our Stage 3 Student Voice Council who attended the annual GRIP Leadership Conference at Newcastle City Hall. They learnt about what leaders should do at school, the importance of integrity and challenges leaders face with a new idea. Such a special opportunity for them to learn, lead and shine.
