Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW. However, due to the ongoing fire risk, the BFDP will be extended in four Local Government Areas, including Gwydir, Mid-Western, Moree Plains and Narrabri.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

For more information on the bush fire danger period and fire permits, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

The cool change has thankfully come through and we now return to a fire danger rating of Moderate.
Thanks to the community for your vigilance and care in preventing any fires during the past few days of elevated fire danger.
While conditions have improved, it still remains dry across the Monaro and we still need to remain aware of the potential for fire in our landscape.

If the past few days have had you thinking about preparing your property and your bushfire survival plan, there are some great resources to be found here --> https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare

TOTAL FIRE BAN & EXTREME FIRE DANGER RATING- SNOWY MONARO LGA- SATURDAY 10TH JANUARY, 2026.
Tomorrow, Saturday 10th January, 2026, will see an EXTREME FIRE DANGER RATING for the Snowy Monaro LGA.
A TOTAL FIRE BAN is in place from midnight to midnight.
Weather conditions of hot, dry & strong winds in our dry landscape will see fires spread rapidly and be very difficult to control.

It is essential that we ensure no fire ignitions occur under these conditions.

- No cooking, campfires or fires of any description are to be lit.
- All Fire Permits are suspended.
- Any form of hot works (welding, grinding, etc) are prohibited.
- We request that no slashing or mowing be undertaken.
- We request that vehicles not be driven in dry grassed areas, or any type of heat source be taken into dry grassed areas.

The safety of our community rests on every persons actions, and we ask every resident and visitor to be mindful of this, and to do their bit in ensuring no fires are started during this time.
