Meet Ali Ahmad 👋

Ali is our Hospitality Technician at the student-run Pavilion Restaurant located on our Joondalup Campus. 🍽️

Students who have come through our culinary and hospitality courses over the past two decades would be very familiar with the friendly Ali, who supports the lecturers in the restaurant as well as oversees the purchasing, finances and overall management of the restaurant.

Hailing from Singapore 🌏, Ali begun his career in the hospitality industry straight after school at the Oberoi Imperial Hotel in Singapore before progressing to the Hyatt.

“It was great to be in the industry in Singapore which was booming at the time, I started as a room service waiter and worked my way up to the bar manager,” he said.

“I moved to Perth in 1985 where I ran the hotel bar in South Perth and at the Chateau Commodore in Perth, it was strange coming from busy Singapore to Perth which was very quiet at the time.”

Ali started his career with TAFE in 1995 at the now closed Carine TAFE before moving to North Metropolitan TAFE’s Joondalup campus and Pavilion Restaurant 18 years ago.

“It has been great ever since, I love the lifestyle of TAFE, I was working 40-60 hours a week as well as weekends; TAFE allowed me to spend more time with my kids,” he said.

“Every semester we have different students, that’s the joy, meeting new people and being able to pass my knowledge onto them and encourage them through their studies.”

Ali encourages people to visit Pavilion Restaurant and try the food which helps support the students through their studies.

Our students are on their initial steps to a whole new world. You can be part of their journey.
