Waste Authority of Western Australia The Waste Authority advises the Minister for Environment on waste management and recycling matters. There are 5 members including the Chairperson.

The Waste Authority is a statutory authority providing independent advice to the Minister for Environment on matters relating to waste management and recycling. Members of the Authority are appointed by the State Government and serve for between two and three years.

♻️ WasteSorted Community Education Grant Project – RE:Fashion: The CFF Clothes Swap & Repair Hub 🧵

Congratulations to Circular Fashion Festival on completing their 2025 WasteSorted Community Education Grant project 👏

The RE:Fashion project transformed a horse float into a bright pink mobile swap and repair hub, bringing circular fashion experiences to communities across WA. Through clothing swaps, repair workshops and hands-on learning opportunities, the project encouraged people to keep textiles in use and out of landfill.

🌟 Project highlights
✅ Delivered 15+ repair, reuse and swap activities and events across Perth, Fremantle and Bunbury, engaging approximately 1,600 people.
✅ Diverted approx 850 garments from landfill through clothing swap and repair activities.
✅ More than 220 exit slip responses demonstrated positive behaviour change, with participants indicating they would swap, repair, buy less and encourage others to embrace circular fashion.

New WasteSorted public place bin signage is now available to download from the LGA resources website, including:

The updated resources are designed to help local governments provide clear, consistent recycling and waste messages in public spaces, making it easier for people to put the right item in the right bin.

♻️ WasteSorted Community Education Grant project – Serpentine Jarrahdale CRC (SJ CRC)

Congratulations to SJ CRC on completing their 2025 grant project - Repair & Reuse Teach and Learn Café 👏

The Repair & Reuse Café connected community members with skilled volunteers to repair household items, learn practical repair skills and explore sustainable alternatives to throwing things away.

🌟 Project highlights
✅ Engaged more than 100 community members through hands-on repair and reuse activities
✅ Kept more than 100 household items and over 160 kg of material out of landfill
✅ Inspired ongoing community learning, including a new weekly sewing group to help residents continue building repair skills

Did you know around one-third of food produced is wasted? 🍎🥕🍞

🥇🚮 The sport where picking up litter earns you points.

SPOGOMI turns cleaning up the environment into a fun team challenge, with competitors racing to collect and sort litter for the highest score. Originating in Japan, it's proving that looking after our environment can be active, social and rewarding.

This Keep Australia Beautiful Week, participants hit City Beach to put their litter-picking skills to the test and help keep one of WA's most-loved coastal areas clean. Bags in hand and ready to compete, students from City Beach Primary School, Our Lady of Mercy Primary School, Mary's Mount Primary School, Fountain College and the Japanese School of Perth took part in the exciting challenge, collecting, sorting and scoring points for litter found along the coastline and surrounding area.

Representatives from Containers for Change WA and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation joined the event, while Australian SPOGOMI Ambassador Jason Partington inspired participants by showing how cleaning up the environment can be both fun and rewarding.

A special thank you to Minister Matt Swinbourn for attending the event and announcing the winning teams, and to Bert's City Beach for generously providing refreshments for participants after a busy morning of competition and community action.

Because when it comes to litter, every piece picked up makes a difference.
