A team of eleven from across the Department – “The Elevators and Regulators” – recently stepped up to the challenge at the MSWA Step Up 2026 stair climb at Central Park, raising funds to support Western Australians living with neurological conditions.

Supported by the department this initiative reflects our shared commitment to health, wellbeing and building a positive workplace culture. More than just a physical challenge, the event provided an opportunity to connect across teams, build resilience, and contribute to a cause that makes a real difference in our community.

👏 A big thank you to everyone involved for demonstrating our values in action:
• Working together across the Department
• Supporting wellbeing and inclusion
• Contributing positively to the community we serve

It was fantastic to see the team come together, show great spirit and achieve such a positive outcome.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this outstanding effort and helped make a meaningful difference.

The Department is currently investigating reports of odours from Rockingham, Shoalwater, Medina and Safety Bay.

Departmental officers have conducted odour patrols and field air measurements in response to community reports. The Department’s monitoring and investigations are ongoing, noting that weather conditions can influence how odours are experienced across different locations.

The Department is working closely with the local government and other stakeholders as a part of these investigations.

Community reports play an important role in supporting this work. If you are experiencing these odours, please submit a report to Environment WAtch via our online form (https://environmentwatch.wa.gov.au/) or by calling 1300 784 782.

Second Prevention Notice served on Cockburn Cement Limited (CCL).

As part of our response to addressing odours in the Cockburn area, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (the Department) has issued CCL with a new Prevention Notice under section 73A of the Environmental Protection Act 1986. The new notice requires CCL to completely cease using odour-causing shell sand during specific times between 3 April and 30 April 2026. This is the latest step in the Department’s ongoing efforts to ensure CCL takes appropriate measures to mitigate the impacts of odour emissions on the community.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation continues to engage with operators in the Nambeelup area to reduce the impacts of odours on the community. C-Wise has commenced desludging and relining of one of the ponds at its premises, which may result in a temporary increase in odour emissions.

This work is an important component to effectively reduce odour in the long-term.

Prevention Notice served on Cockburn Cement Limited (CCL).

As part of our response to addressing odours in the Cockburn area, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) has today issued CCL with a Prevention Notice. The notice requires CCL to reduce the throughput rate of shell sand down to a maximum of 160 dry tonnes per hour (t/h). This reduction in feed rate seeks to reduce odour concentrations and emission rates over the summer period.
