How do you get a waterwise garden to thrive on the 2-days-per-week sprinkler roster?

Sabrina Hahn - Hort with Heart chooses good shade-providing trees to lower the evaporation loss in her garden and cool down the surrounding ground surfaces to create cooler spaces for less resilient plants in the warmer months.

Waterwise gardeners like to work smart and not (too) hard to keep their garden thriving all year round, so they choose native plants. Many native plants offer a variety of benefits to any garden and are self-sufficient most of the year.

Native plants are perfectly adapted to the local climate and once established, need minimal maintenance. They display a beautiful colour palette and help to shade and cool your home. They also provide food and habitat for native birds and other crucial pollinators such as blue-banded bees.

How long are your sprinklers being used on your rostered days? A thriving waterwise garden depends on the right sprinklers being used for the right length of time. It’s important to remember that different sprinkler types and site conditions may require different watering run times.

For example, recommended run times for sandy soils may be different for other soil types like clay or loam. Find out more in this fact sheet: https://begroundwaterwise.wa.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/2_days_watering_fact_sheet.pdf

What time of the day should I turn my sprinklers on? How often can I water my garden?

Households watering from a garden bore or scheme water in Perth (Boorloo) and Mandurah (Mandjoogoordap) can water twice per week on your rostered days during the warmer months.

On your rostered days, sprinklers can be used once a day, before 9am or after 6pm. Less water is lost to evaporation during these cooler times of the day, meaning more for your plants.

With the warmer weather on its way, waterwise gardeners want to make sure that water from their irrigation system is not lost to wind and evaporation before it reaches their plants’ root zone.

To achieve this, and to help save our precious groundwater, remember to only switch on your garden bore either before 9am or after 6pm, once per day on your 2 rostered watering days each week. This time of day is cooler, and your plants will receive the maximum amount of water from your irrigation system.

Since 1 September 2022, the sprinkler roster for all households in Perth (Boorloo) and Mandurah (Mandjoogoordap) has been two days per week. The same for both scheme and bore water users.

The roster was introduced to help manage our groundwater for the future. Although recent winter rains were helpful, many decades of declining rainfall together with increasing population mean we need to ensure we are using our groundwater resources sustainably and efficiently.

How can we manage climate change in our neighbourhood? Sabrina Hahn - Hort with Heart says it starts in the garden. Thoughtful selection of plants that thrive on less water and have adjusted to surviving our warmer months is important. That’s why Sabrina recommends native plants for your garden and our climate.

Sabrina Hahn’s waterwise garden is a perfect example. It shows how smart design, such as hydrozoning, can cut down on irrigation and look amazing. Hydrozoning is grouping plants with similar water needs, and combined with choosing planting natives, can help you achieve a waterwise garden that helps shade and cool your yard and home.

No other part of Australia has seen a drop in rainfall as sharply as the south-west of WA.

And this four decade trend is likely to continue providing a hotter, and drier future for the region.

Less rainfall also means less recharge to our groundwater resources, drier wetlands and lower flows in our rivers.

Although the Perth (Boorloo) or Peel (Bindjareb) areas did receive average to above average rainfall overall this winter, this wasn’t the case for the whole region, including important water supply catchment areas. We need to continue working together to make Perth a waterwise city.

For a thriving waterwise lawn, choose species that are drought-tolerant and best suited for the warm seasons in Perth (Boorloo) and Peel (Bindjareb).

The right amount of water, aeration, and regular application of soil wetting agents and slow-release fertilizers, will help to keep your lawn looking healthy all year round.

Thriving on just 2 watering days a week? It’s totally doable!

Sabrina Hahn - Hort with Heart shows how the right gardening can keep your patch lush and happy. It’s all about smart choices and waterwise habits!

An important step is to firstly set up your irrigation controller to only water either before 9am or after 6pm on your 2 rostered days. These cooler times of the day prevent less water evaporating from our garden.
