Our aim is to provide and promote equitable opportunity for meeting the informational needs of the people of the City of Kalamunda in a friendly and helpful environment. OUR STORY
The City of Kalamunda Library Service has provided more than 62 years of continuous library service. It has been a vital part of the community since it began in 1958, and its history illustrates how it has responded to t

he needs of local people. On 3 October 1958 the district's first public library opened in a small transportable building at Recreation Reserve (now Kostera Oval). This consisted of two timber and fibro huts which were purchased from Allawah Grove a former migrant hostel in Guildford, to be used as temporary premises for a library.

• 1963 - New Public Library at Kalamunda opened on Railway Road.
• 1977 - ‘Friends of the Library’ and housebound delivery service established.
• 1978 - Mobile Library service established.
• 1980 - Forrestfield Library officially opened.
• 1982 - Lesmurdie Community Library opened, first joint-use library to be built in WA.
• 1984 - Local History Collection established.
• 1987 - Major extensions to the Kalamunda Library.
• 1988 - High Wycombe Library officially opened.
• 1988 - Stained glass window completed and handed over to the Shire of Kalamunda.
• 1991 - Automation arrived and the card catalogue departed.
• 1997 - High Wycombe Library extended.
• 2009 - Catalogue went online.
• 2015 - page launched.
• 2017 - Kalamunda Library refurbished with Self-Check technology.
• 2018 - Celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Library Services.
• 2020 – Implementation of New Library Management System & Online Catalogue
• 2021 - Here we are today! We now have a fabulous eLibrary too and continue to host many and varied events & programmes catering for all community members.
• 2021 - Coming Soon – ‘Library Services Mobile App’

𝑾𝒆𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝑾𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 - 𝗚𝘆𝗺𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟬𝘀

The Kalamunda Gymkhana was an annual sporting event held each spring at Kostera Oval from approximately 1949 – 1957. The event was sparked by a growing need for somewhere for the various sporting groups of the district to come together, and also served as a fundraiser for various local charitable groups such as Lesmurdie Hospital and the Kalamunda ambulance service.

The main events of the day were motorsport racing, with TQ “midget” speed cars, sedans, and motorcycles racing on the gravel track around the oval, sending gravel and dust flying everywhere. The midget cars had a hand operated pump on the outside of the body, and the driver could be seen furiously pumping this in and out, presumably to pressurise the fuel tank.

Other sports often seen competing or performing displays at the gymkhanas included horse riding, rodeo, cycling, judo, fencing and log chopping. Activities such as egg-and-spoon, wheelbarrow and sack races were held for the children, and there were also stalls, sideshows and a parade of floats and novelty vehicles. One novelty event that was included for a time was the greasy pig competition, in which a pig would be smeared with grease and released for people to try to catch, but this was cancelled after one contestant who’d had too much to drink caused the pig an injury.

Pickering Brook also held Gymkhanas during the same period.

Today we join millions around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, a beloved singer, songwriter, actor, philanthropist and cultural icon whose warmth, generosity and optimism touched generations.

While she will always be celebrated for her incredible achievements in music and entertainment, Dolly's impact reached far beyond the stage. Through the 𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲, she championed childhood literacy and a lifelong love of reading, helping to place books into the hands of children and inspiring generations of young readers.
