Hannans North Tourist Mine staff member, Viv and her family, recently had the opportunity to visit the “New Taipei City Gold Museum” while travelling in Taiwan.
Much like our museum, Visitors can explore preserved mining buildings, step into original underground tunnels to experience life as a miner and try traditional gold panning.
There are also exhibits showing historic mining equipment, informative displays about the region’s gold rush history, and even a 220kg gold brick (worth approximately $51.1 million to $54 million AUD!) that visitors can touch!
It was fantastic to see how another part of the world shares and preserves its mining heritage. Visits like this, give us new ideas and inspiration for telling the story of gold mining back home in Kalgoorlie.

A Story of Confusion and Betrayal
On this day the 26th of Feb 1904

Two men, Solomon and Rasmussen, believed to be close friends, spent an evening together at a house on Forrest Street in Kalgoorlie. They shared a bottle of English ale and scones purchased by Solomon.

After Rasmussen finished his first scone, Solomon insisted he have another — an offer he could not politely refuse. Rasmussen noticed the second scone had been broken but thought little of it. Though he remarked on its bitterness, he ate half before, it is alleged, Solomon placed the remaining piece in his pocket.

Following some friendly conversation, Rasmussen began to feel unusual pains. He voiced his discomfort to Solomon, but his concerns were dismissed.

A short time later, Solomon claimed he was going to fetch a doctor. However, medical assistance was never sought, and his whereabouts became unknown. Rasmussen was eventually discovered after his cries for help were heard.

Doctors later diagnosed Rasmussen’s illness, and police inquiries led them to the Launceston Hotel, where Solomon had been staying. When apprehended, Solomon appeared surprisingly composed. Yet an unexpected and tragic turn soon followed. Upon arrival at the police station, he was asked to stand. As he put weight on his feet, he suddenly collapsed. Despite medical attention, life was declared extinct.

It was later discovered that Solomon had earlier attempted to throw cyanide of potassium from a window. Authorities believed this was the substance he had taken before his death.

No clear motive was ever established as to why Solomon attempted to poison Rasmussen, nor why he took his own life. Speculation at the time suggested money may have been a factor, as Rasmussen reportedly carried forty pounds in his pocket on the night of the poisoning.

Remarkably, Rasmussen made a full recovery.
