As Australian Racing heads into the Group 1 fast paced 1400m Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes the 2017 winner Santa Ana Lane is taking it easy at Living Legends. Living Legends is superbly situated at one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most historic thoroughbred properties – The Woodlands Historic Park, Homestead and Heritage Gardens.

Woodlands Homestead serves as the main visitor hub for Living Legends, housing a cafe, an extensive art collection, and racing memorabilia alongside the home of retired champion racehorses.

Champion horses have been owned, bred and spelled on this property since the 1840’s, making it the ideal location for our retired equine royalty.

Woodlands Homestead is a unique and treasured part of Victoria’s heritage. Established in 1843, it is a rare example of a large pre-constructed timber kit house brought to Australia from Britain.

The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes races September at Caulfield Racecourse Visit Melbourne

PAUL PRY owned by Hare-Naylor later Sir Rupert Clarke.
WINNER of the KALGOORLIE CUP (twice) in 1897 the Lochiel gelding Paul Pry was a great galloper.

Horse racing history meets the gentlemen of cricket through Paul Pry. A story campaigned to KBRC and the sports journalist, perhaps with the Melbourne Cup Tour that has this year visited London and Chichester, PAUL PRY, the story of Rupertswood and the Ashes may be of interest in a positive light of the conservation and presentation of the historic Garden Racecourse of the old Goldfields of Western Australia.

With J. Naylor listed as the WA purchaser and E.G.S. ("Jackie") Hare as owner of PAUL PRY when he won the Kalgoorlie Cups of 1897 before his return back east.

It is a wonderful story, PAUL PRY seems always referred to as Old Paul Pry, he was so loved by east coast owner Sir Rupert Clarke when the gelding died he buried him at the Winning Post/judges box at Sunbury, the area was fenced and cared for in memory of Old PAUL PRY.

The Clarke's and the mansion Rupertswood, home of the Kalgoorlie Cup winner of 1897 is apparently the birthplace of the ashes from the very cricket match and burning of the stump. Howzat !
