On 2nd June, the Consulate-General of Japan and the Queensland Parliament jointly hosted a reception celebrating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan (the NARA Treaty), the 130th anniversary of the opening of Japan’s first diplomatic mission in Australia in Townsville, and the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Consulate-General of Japan in Brisbane, as well as commemorating the launch of the Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Japan Group.

The reception was honoured by the presence of the Premier of Queensland, the Hon. David Crisafulli MP, state government ministers and members of state parliament. Mr SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, also delivered a video message. Consul-General ISHIKAWA made an address to reflect on the long and enduring relationship between Japan and Queensland, while highlighting the significant potential and opportunities for further cooperation between Japan and Australia, and expressed his commitment to deepening exchanges across a wide range of fields through collaboration with counterparts such as the Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Japan Group.

The reception featured booths hosted by Saitama Prefecture and chambers of commerce, promotion of Japanese products such as sake and shochu (thanks to .asobigokoro), and whisky, as well as Japanese cuisine, along with cutting-edge electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered cars. These attractions drew great attention from the guests. We are very pleased that this reception provided an opportunity for Japanese companies and organisations to deepened exchange between the state government and members of parliament.

On 28 May, Consul-General ISHIKAWA visited Brisbane State High School to meet with the Senior Leadership Team, observe a Japanese language class and interact with students. The school is a prestigious institution celebrating its 105th anniversary this year, having produced many distinguished alumni across various fields. The Consulate-General of Japan is delighted that a lot of young students in Australia, especially in Queensland, are learning Japanese and wishes to support their Japanese language studies and deeper understanding of Japanese culture through organising various cultural events. We look forward to seeing many students take part.
