Last fortnight received a visit from the Chief of Army (CA), Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, AO, DSC, and the Regimental Sergeant Major – Army (RSM-A), Warrant Officer Kim Felmingham, NSC, OAM. This marks the fourth official visit to the Regiment by the Chief, making for a new record of our VIP Grove, with four total plaques on his tree. The Regiment was also with 37 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who received the Chief for a tarmac tour following a successful week training with the Regiment.

Finally, to thank the CA and RSM-A for their strong advocacy for the Pilbara Regiment and Regional Force Surveillance Group - Australian Army, we gifted a traditional handmade shield and digging stick to the CA and RSM respectively.

The Regiment extends our deepest thanks for the Chief and RSM’s continued support.

The Pilbara Regiment proudly congratulates PTE Mundinarra Daley on her selection to attend the 2026 New York City Marathon with The Indigenous Marathon Foundation. This outstanding achievement reflects Mundinarra’s discipline, resilience and commitment.

Representing the Pilbara and Indigenous Australians on a global stage is no small feat – her journey is an inspiration to our soldiers and the next generation of young leaders. We wish PTE Daley every success as she trains and competes for New York in 2026!

is more than you’d think…

Fitness is one of the aspects that enables us to patrol some of the most remote and challenging environments in Australia. From the red rock hills of the Pilbara to the Midwest and Gascoyne, we are committed to remaining alert.

, 1 Squadron, is in your red-dirt backyard.

Vehicle skills are essential to the roles of reconnaissance and surveillance of our vast north, and this month, the team has been busy training soldiers using the local areas of Port Hedland and Karratha. Our newly established catering detachment was happy to provide grub to the troops while they were busy burning rubber and learning new skills around the sand and stations.

? The colour patch of the Pilbara Regiment was approved on 27 May 1986.

With no lineage prior to 5th Independent Rifle Company, raised on 26 Jan 1982, a new design was required. Approval was granted for The Pilbara Regiment to base the patch on the Northern Australia Observer Unit (NAOU), retaining the horizontal double-diamond shape but replacing the NAOU’s battleship grey—reserved for 2nd AIF units—with burnt orange and black, reflecting local landscape and identity. The result is a distinctive insignia linking northern defence heritage with strong regional character.

The colour patch is worn on the right side of the Khaki Fur Felt and is used to delineate the posted unit of a member.

Captain Maria Martin-Pedersen, Regimental Cultural Advisor to the Pilbara Regiment, plays a vital role in welcoming new march-ins to country. Many soldiers arrive from large east coast battalions and quickly recognise that the Pilbara is operationally and culturally distinct. Through Acknowledgement to Country ceremonies, Captain Martin-Pedersen contextualises the Regiment within First Nations heritage, local customs, cultural safety and community relationships.

Her guidance reinforces that service in the Pilbara demands not only soldiering competence, but also cultural awareness and respect for the land so we do no harm to country while on country. This grounding ensures that new members understand they are joining a unit embedded in land, language and longstanding regional responsibility.
