From the archives, today’s Monday Memory highlights William (Bill) Miller, a pioneer of the fishing industry at Point Samson.

After the war, a young Bill Miller teamed up with an offsider and together they hatched a bold plan: to establish a freezer plant at Point Samson in late 1944.

Can you imagine? Plenty of fish. A population of six. Stifling heat. No water. No power. No services. One car to reach the nearest town, and a plan to build a fishing base from the ground up.

While the freezer plant took time to get off the ground, Miller’s career was anything but idle. He turned his hand to prospecting, gold and asbestos mining, diamond drilling, truck driving and hunting - later recalling, “you name it, we had a go at it.”

When a Wittenoom miner purchased the still unassembled freezer plant, Miller helped get the fishing operation underway, leading to the establishment of Samson Fisheries in 1946.

Check out these donated images featuring Bill Miller and friends from the 1950s and 1960s at Conzinc Island and Sam's Creek. If you knew Bill Miller or have stories about those early days in Point Samson, the Local History team would love to hear from you! [email protected]

👏 Meet the incredible young people on the City of Karratha's Youth Advisory Group (YAG)!

They each bring unique skills and experience to the group, and a deep commitment to their community. This committee is about creating space for young people to be heard, to lead, and to drive change in areas they are passionate about.

At the last meeting, YAG contributed feedback to the City Centre Precinct Structure Plan, brainstormed youth activities for this year's FeNaCING Festival, and started planning for Youth Week 2027.

🌟 We can't wait to see how their plans turn into actions and contribute to positive youth initiatives across the City.

🍳 The City of Karratha’s Club Development Program hosted a Presidents Breakfast on Friday 22 May at Karratha Leisureplex as part of National Volunteer Week.

The breakfast provided an opportunity for the City to thank more than 30 club presidents and representatives who generously volunteer their time to support our local sporting community. It also allowed attendees to hear important updates on projects, grants and oval turf management initiatives.

🙏 Thank you to all volunteers who contribute their time, effort and passion to our community. The City remains committed to improving how we recognise and support our volunteers, while continuing to strengthen our local sporting clubs and community groups.

Hampton Oval lighting upgrade works commence 2 June

The City of Karratha, in partnership with Rio Tinto, will commence installation works for a new lighting system at Hampton Oval from Tuesday 2 June 2026.

Hampton Oval will remain open throughout the project, however there may be restricted access to pathways at times, with construction zones and laydown areas securely fenced off to help keep the community safe.

The community is asked to please be mindful of construction activities and follow all onsite safety measures while works are underway.

The new lighting system will help bring Hampton Oval to life at night, supporting more community events, sport and activities into the future.

💨 Due to strong winds, the City of Karratha has had limited opportunities to spray w**ds before slashing works begin. Increased w**d growth has occurred in areas with retained moisture or irrigation overspray, while some drier areas have responded well to slashing alone.

🍃 Slashing is currently underway in the Light Industrial Area, followed by mowing and brush cutting around edges and infrastructure. Works will move to Baynton next week, with additional crews focusing on hotspot areas including Baynton Drive and pathways around schools.

📥 Public reports of excessive w**d growth will be treated as hotspots and responded to ad-hoc ahead of the scheduled slashing, mowing and brush cutting set service.
