πŸ”₯πŸš’ Ngula Bulgarabang Hazard Reduction – 30th April 2026

Today, our crew along with other brigades, assisted National Parks and Wildlife Service with a planned hazard reduction burn at Ngula Bulgarabang Regional Park (Radiata Plateau).

πŸ”₯ This burn was particularly important, as the area had not experienced fire for over 45 years. Carefully planned operations like this help manage fuel levels and reduce the risk of more intense bushfires in the future.

πŸ‘©β€πŸš’ It was also a great opportunity for one of our crew members to gain valuable experience working in a controlled environment. We’re proud to say Lucy did an amazing job, as did the rest of the crew.

πŸ”₯πŸš’ March & April Recap

πŸ“… The past two months have been both busy and meaningful for our brigade.

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸš’ We participated in community events such as the Women & Girls in Rural Firefighting Day and the Youth Expo, supported our community on ANZAC Day, and continued with regular training, assessments, and skill development on the fireground.

πŸš’ We also worked with other brigades and agencies on hazard reduction activities to help prepare our area for the next fire season.

πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸš’πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸš’ Throughout this period, we celebrated team achievements and continued to support and develop our members at every stage of their journey within the RFS.

πŸ”₯ These months have demonstrated strong teamwork, ongoing learning, and community connection. We are proud of the dedication our members continue to show.

πŸ‘‰ If you are interested in getting involved, there is a place for you in the RFS. Please see the link in the comments to learn more. πŸ‘‡

πŸ”₯Venus Hazard Reduction πŸš’

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ Today, our South Katoomba Cat 7 crew of four joined National Parks and Wildlife Service and other RFS brigades to complete a planned hazard reduction in the Woodford area.

πŸ”₯ The weather was good, and crews worked steadily all day to complete the burn successfully.

πŸŒ₯️These operations depend on good weather, teamwork between agencies, and careful planning to make sure everything is done safely and effectively.

πŸ”₯ Safe to say one of the crew may have developed a bit of a fondness for the drip torch along the way πŸ˜„

πŸ”₯πŸš’ Skills Training: Fire Dynamics and Ventilation

πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ Last Wednesday, our crews practised fire behaviour with a small-scale simulator to learn how fires start, spread, and become dangerous.

🏠 This training may look simple, but it gives firefighters a safe way to see how quickly things can change inside a fire, like smoke movement, heat buildup, and how fast a situation can escalate.

Crews were focusing on:
πŸ”₯ Early fire behaviour
🌫️ Reading smoke and understanding pressure
πŸ”₯ Flashover vs backdraft and how to recognise the warning signs
πŸšͺ How ventilation and openings can change fire behaviour

Training like this helps our firefighters make safer, faster decisions on the fireground, which protects both the community and themselves.

(Also, a big thankyou to Fire and Rescue NSW Station 343 Katoomba for turning out to a smoke sighting πŸ™‚)
