Yesterday was St Florian's Day, and our own Deputy Captain and the backbone of our station Mark Hawling recieved a Commendation for his work at a job in 2019 with other crew members from our station. This is well deserved recognition for one of our most respected and treasured members of our crew. Mark is pictured here with Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM and members of our neighbour station Fire and Rescue NSW Station 343 Katoomba also part of the job that night

Today we recognise St Florian’s Day, honouring the patron saint of firefighters and the courage, dedication, and sacrifice shown by firefighters around the world.

At Station 216 Bathurst, we are proud to serve our community, by always being prepared for anything to protect the irreplaceable.

Like guardians of peace in a galaxy far, far away, firefighters operate as a team, rely on training and skill, and answer the call when duty demands it, because protecting the community is always the mission.

Today we also acknowledge firefighters everywhere who put themselves on the line to keep others safe, as well as the families, friends, and support crews who make that service possible.

May the Fourth be with you 🚀

Warm regards,
216 Bathurst Crew 🔥🚒

Lithium-ion Battery Safety is a hot topic in 2026 and Katoomba fire fighters are supporting the new 'Shop, Charge & Recycle Safely' campaign.

Just because a charger fits, doesn't mean it's safe. If it didn't come with your device or battery, don't use it. Stick to approved chargers and look for the Australian Regulatory Compliance Mark to make sure it's both safe and compatible.

The end of March brings to an end a month of 'Seniors Fire Safety' initiatives by stations across the Blue Mountains, as fire fighters try and spread fire safety messages to our elderly communities.

A number of nursing homes, over 55's accommodations and community groups have been engaged with in March and yesterday saw fire fighters deliver a fire safety presentation to the residents of the Blue Mountains Retirement Village on Queens Road.

As part of the villages 'Cuppa & Chat' regular social event on Monday's, fire fighters took the opportunity to discuss key fire safety messages along with a Q&A session that gave the residents the chance to ask questions about current trends in building fires and Lithium-ion battery safety, along with important advice around working smoke alarms and safety with electric blankets as we see the weather start to turn colder.

A big thank you to the residents and staff at BMRV for having us.

It's not too late to arrange fire fighters to visit your group or organisation so get in contact with your local station if you want to arrange a fire safety visit.

If you were tuning in to Radio Blue Mountains 89.1 this morning you would have overheard one of Katoomba's Station Commander's talking all things Seniors Fire Safety as the radio station gave our crew the opportunity to discuss important fire safety tips and information ahead of Seniors Week.

Robyn and Murray were great hosts allowing us air time to share key messages ahead of the winter months. We will endeavor to download the breaky show interview and share it if possible.

TRAINING EXERCISE AT SCENIC WORLD

A perfect crisp morning in the Jamison Valley saw Katoomba fire fighters join Blue Mountain’s iconic Scenic World as part of their annual rescue training exercise. Located in the heart of the World Heritage listed national park, Scenic World is the most visited tourist attraction in Australia and is home to the steepest railway in the world, as well as Australia’s steepest cable cart.

The cable cart is one of the centres main attractions and operates throughout the day ascending 220 vertical metres down to the valley floor, carrying a maximum of 85 guests plus 1 driver.

This morning’s drill was a simulation of an emergency breakdown of the cable cart ‘mid run’ which would then require passengers to be evacuated. Using a specially designed 'rescue cart' kept on site, Scenic World’s engineering team, accompanied by members from the emergency services, are able to access the cable cart and ‘rescue’ stranded passengers. This mornings drill ran very smoothly, ensuring that all of the necessary safety and rescue systems are in place, well maintained and operating correctly.

Thanks as always to Scenic World Blue Mountains staff for the invitation.
