Our Fire Trucks carry about 2000 litres of water. This can be enough to put out smaller fires such as a car. Firefighters rely on fire hydrants as a source of water to put out bigger fires such as a house. These are generally located on the nature strip that runs in front of homes along the street. Part of our daily routine is to walk the streets to ensure that we are able to access these fire hydrants. We commonly encounter hydrants that are concealed under the grass where the lawn has grown over them. We dig them out so we can access these hydrants in an emergency. Today we were called to a house fire. We eventually found the fire hydrant buried under the front lawn. Not only was it buried but a data cable was laid over the top of it. We rely on fire hydrants to be able to do our job. Please, if you have a fire hydrant out the front of your house, make sure the grass is kept clear of it. And please, if it’s your job to run services in the street, don’t make our job hard by making your job easy. When seconds count in an emergency, having access to a fire hydrant can be the difference between a good outcome and a tragic outcome. The appropriate authorities have been contacted to rectify this issue.
