Today, on International Women’s Day, the Kemps Creek Rural Fire Brigade proudly reflects on the remarkable women of the Kemps Creek Volunteer Fire Brigade who, during the 1970s, answered the call and responded to incidents during the daytime when others were unavailable. Their dedication, courage, and commitment helped shape the brigade we know today.

In more modern times, women continue to play an essential and highly active role in the Rural Fire Service, responding to incidents 24/7 and contributing across all areas of brigade life. We are incredibly proud of the women serving in our brigade today and grateful for the path paved by those who came before them.

Happy International Women’s Day — today we celebrate past, present, and future generations of women in the RFS.

The Kemps Creek Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in February 1940, with Messrs Stanley Varidel and Albert Preston appointed by Nepean Shire Council as Captain and Deputy Captain.

Since those early days, the Brigade has continually evolved. From the original Bush Fire Brigades to becoming part of what is now the NSW Rural Fire Service, the Brigade has adapted to changes in legislation, governance, and emergency response. Over the decades, appliances, equipment, uniforms, and firefighting techniques have all progressed alongside advances in technology.

The people of the Brigade have also changed, reflecting the evolving demographics of our community. What has remained constant, however, is the dedication of local volunteers who give their time to protect lives, property, and the environment.

This year, the Kemps Creek Rural Fire Brigade proudly celebrates 86 years of service — built on 86 years of volunteering, resilience, and commitment to our community.

Residents across the Cumberland/Macarthur District, including Campbelltown, Liverpool, Camden, Blacktown, Penrith and Fairfield, will have noticed smoke haze and the smell of smoke today.

The smoke is drifting into the Sydney basin due to southerly winds carrying smoke from bushfires currently burning in Victoria.

This photo was taken near Kentlyn where visibility was reported to be as low as 150m in low-lying areas of Campbelltown.

Only call 000 if you see an unattended fire, flames, or an immediate threat to life or property.

Smoke safety tips:
- Keep windows and doors closed
- Avoid outdoor activities if smoke is causing irritation
- Use air conditioning on recirculate
- Those with asthma or other respiratory conditions should follow their health management plans
- If symptoms such as severe shortness of breath occur, seek medical advice

NSW RFS continues to monitor conditions closely. We appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping keep emergency lines available for genuine emergencies.
