One of our suppliers asked us recently if there was anything else we typically order that they could supply. When we sent them a recent order from another raw ingredient supplier, they said something along the lines of“we were hoping to get the invoice, not the catalogue”. They thought our order was the whole ingredient list!

When we say we make almost everything we serve from scratch, we mean it. In a world full of “order in and heat up because that’s faster”, we are poaching eggs freshly into boiling water from raw, mixing our own spice blends, cooking our own ketchup, making pita and more. Yes, it takes a little longer because your food mostly starts as individual ingredients before you order. But it’s worth it - quality inputs (olive oil only!), fresh ingredients and lots of love 🩷

We love these photos from the spice markets in Istanbul as they give us so much inspiration and remind us to never compromise on our passion for great, homemade food - which is the reason we started this business in the first place 🥧

Sour cream pastry in the making 🥧

We take pride in making (almost) everything from scratch using high quality ingredients - this one has plenty of cultured butter and is featured in our veggie tart... perhaps homemade pies could be on the horizon soon?

A little while ago we started dreaming up the idea of hosting a community driven celebration of women. Run by women, for women. A small group sharing stories, food and space; learning from each other and giving back to women’s sport.

Alongside the local women’s only football team we put together an International Women’s Day evening which highlighted the roles we all share in our communities. We were so proud to have local (ABC Gippsland) and (W Club Melbourne) share their stories and expertise alongside the group who gathered with us to bring our idea to life.

We also raised money from ticket sales, merchandise and memberships for the Bass Coast Breakers - which would not have been possible without the generous help of our family, friends, coworkers and teammates who donated their time to help with everything from set up to cooking, cleaning, selling tickets and working the bar on the night.

Make sure you get down to a breakers game this season or ask us about memberships and merchandise for sale at kgs (and our store out the back ) to support women’s sport - we could not do it without help from the wider community.

Happy International Women’s Day ⚖️

Swipe to see the photo that upset us yesterday - someone ordering takeaway but not intending to take away. More cups into landfill. More coffees not at their best. Let’s try to challenge the societal marketing trend that is disposable containers - they really are a fashion / marketing statement in an industry that has convinced us that eating and drinking out of literal trash is better than the alternative. Choose reusable every time you can, slow down and enjoy your coffee ☕️

It makes us sad when we see our feeds (and lives) filled with what our society has recently deemed “coffee culture” - disposable, take away style coffee and food containers. Especially when there is an alternative, and don’t even get us started on those clear plastic ones!

How have we got to the point that we accept that drinking out of a paper cup lined and lidded with “plastic” is anywhere near as good as ceramic or pottery? How can we sit down and enjoy a coffee but choose to have it in a disposable vessel? Do most people not have conscious thought for the quality loss and thermodynamics of the coffee, let alone the environmental footprint it creates? (Yes, some may be fully compostable but even this is still wasteful and you’d be surprised to know that most are not compostable or composted correctly so end up in landfill anyway).

We serve take away coffee at kgs, because sometimes it’s a last resort when we’re on the move - a last resort but at times a necessity. However, we believe that sitting for coffee should be a preference and an experience to be savoured.

So we encourage you to sit and enjoy your coffee unless you really need to get going, and we do not serve food or drinks in take away / disposable containers unless you have to take it away.

If you’re looking to sit somewhere and eat or drink out of a disposable container, we aren’t the place for you - please show respect when this is explained to you and if you really don’t like it, find somewhere that aligns with your values. We spend lots of time, money and energy doing our best to limit our footprint and hope that our customers share our values 🌍

Slow down and enjoy the small things - food should be prepared with love and savoured, whether by yourself or sharing with others. Of course there are times where takeaway is necessary but we encourage you to sit and enjoy your food and coffee with our curated crockery and tableware where possible. We aim to focus on reusable not only for the best experience but also to reduce our single use products which often end up in landfill.

No clear plastic takeaway cups or bowls here (these are not really compostable), no filling our bins with endless paper napkins and plastic milk bottles (our Juggler milk system which stores and doses our Jersey cow milk has reduced milk packaging waste more than we could have imagined). Enjoy your coffee in our ceramics for the best flavour, feeling in your hand and heat retention due to having a high specific heat capacity. Please bring your own cup for takeaway if you can, or get a home compostable paper cup as a last resort.

We sell our linen napkins, mugs, tea pots and more in our shop out the back if you see something that could elevate your tablewares at home. Tea cups are currently sold out but will be restocking later in the year ☕️
