Kilmore needs a public secondary school, and it remains one of Mitchell Shire Council’s advocacy priorities.

This has been a long fight for Kilmore, and having it on Council’s advocacy agenda means we can continue putting the case forward and pursuing every possible avenue to make it a reality.

This is about our kids and our families, and making sure children growing up in Kilmore have the opportunity to attend a public secondary school in their own town.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but we’ll keep pushing.

We’re united with the Kilmore community behind a clear State Election call: deliver a public secondary school for Kilmore.

Kilmore is Victoria’s largest town without a public secondary school. More than 1,200 secondary school-aged children already live locally, with students travelling to Wallan, Broadford and further afield each day.

Our message to every party and candidate contesting the 2026 Victorian State Election is clear: commit to purchasing the land, designing and constructing the school.

Council is supporting community group Public High School For Kilmore, which is holding a meeting where residents can learn more and add their voice to the campaign.

📅 Tuesday 15 September
🕡 6.30pm
📍 John Taylor Room, Kilmore Library

Parents, students, educators and other interested community members are encouraged to attend.

A bit of a look inside the Mitchell Shire Council Chambers.

We spend a fair bit of time in this room, and there’s a lot more that happens here than just Council meetings.

It’s where we talk through and debate issues, ask questions, hear from community members, receive presentations from external organisations and undertake training. We also hold our Community Questions Hearing and Council meetings proper here.

It’s also where we get the opportunity to dig into issues, challenge what’s put in front of us and make sure we have the information we need before making a decision.

Being a Councillor puts you at the front of a lot of decisions and issues. It also means you’re often the first person people turn to when they’re frustrated. That’s part of the job and part of a healthy democracy. People should be able to question us, disagree with us and have their say.

Sitting in this Chamber is something I never take for granted. My community voted for me to sit at this table and represent them, and that’s an honour I’m incredibly proud of.

Wallan East deserves facilities and services that meet local needs, and this project will make a genuine difference for families.

Having taken part in the official sod turn in December, it’s fantastic to now see the frame nearly complete and the centre taking shape.

Once operational, the Wallan East Integrated Family and Children’s Centre will bring kindergarten, maternal and child health, primary and allied health services, and flexible community spaces together in one location.

Essential services closer to home and a major investment in Wallan East exactly what the community deserves.

One of the things I enjoy most as a councillor is seeing local businesses continue to grow and succeed.

The Gaol Cafe is a great example. Set within one of Kilmore's most iconic heritage buildings, it's become a place where locals catch up over a coffee, visitors experience a piece of our history, and great food brings people together.

Since taking over the café, Furat and Narim have embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, building on its strong reputation while introducing their own ideas and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Local businesses are the backbone of our community. They add to the character of our town, support community life and help keep Kilmore vibrant.

If you haven't been to the Gaol Cafe for a while, drop in, say hello and support a local business that's helping write the next chapter of one of Kilmore's most recognisable landmarks.

Roads matter. Recreation matters. Jobs matter. Every one of our advocacy priorities is important.
But when I think about Kilmore, I always come back to education.
We are Victoria's oldest inland town. We have a proud history, a strong community and we're continuing to grow.
For me, a public secondary school is about giving local families the choice they deserve.
It's about making sure our young people have every opportunity to learn, grow and build their future close to home. It's about recognising that a town like Kilmore should have the same opportunities as communities right across Victoria. It's about our community, our young people and making sure Kilmore continues to grow in the right direction.
It's something I've believed in for a long time, and I'll keep backing it.

For over 20 years, Kilmore Pizza House has been a valued part of our community, employing countless local people and serving the people of Kilmore.

Businesses like this are an important part of what makes our towns strong. They create local jobs, support local families and contribute to the local economy each and every day.

As a community, we're fortunate to have local businesses that continue to invest in Kilmore and the people who call it home.

Thank you to Dilip and the team for the contribution you've made to Kilmore and the many local people you've supported over the years. Supporting local businesses like this helps keep our community strong.
