Book online from our updated website. Kingaroy Observatory is Qld's largest, self funded Astro tourism business. Established in August 2004, this is Queensland's largest, self-funded astronomical observatory, designed and operated by full time astronomer James Barclay. Now located at the Kingaroy Airport - 4kms from town, the observatory is equiped with three, Meade 14 inch SCT LX200 GPS computer

assisted telescopes. With these telescope and our dark (Mv 6.5) skies, we can show you up close, the Moon, Planets and Stars. We also give a green laser guided tour of the night skies and you get first-hand info on what you are looking at in the telescopes.

Astronomer James aka Dr Jim will be attending the 4th annual Aussie Camp Oven Dinner Under the Stars on July 11, at Hillview Cottages Kingaroy ( just a 10 min. drive north of Kingaroy) with two larger telescopes so you can view Star Clusters, Nebulae, Galaxies and binary Stars to name few. His passion and knowledge of the Cosmos will amaze you !

Wearing his custom-made Glow-In-Dark gown (the only one its kind in Australia ) you will experience a night under the stars like no other ! If its cloudy, the dinner is still on and we have an unique Plan B so you still get experience.

The astronomer also gives the audience a laser Guided Tour of the Galaxy, pointing out various Stars and Constellations which includes some Star Signs - Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn to name s few. !

The astronomer has been in Astronomy for over 70-years and his passion for it all is beyond reproach.

Never has there been a stargazing night that had so many Doctors from the Kingaroy Hospital at he Obs, last night - April 16).

It total we had 25, in attendance and they all got to view dozens of Deep Sky objects - Star clusters, Nebulae, Binary stars, galaxies, a green laser guided tour of the night skies, and close-up views of the gas giant planet Jupiter, in our large telescopes. Throughout the evening, host astronomer, James aka Dr Jim gave an informative commentary of it all. James has been passionately stargazing since he was 6-years old. He turns 80 on Sept. 21 2026.

Aside, don't forget the Aussie Camp Oven Dinner Under the Stars at Hillview Cottages Kingaroy on July 11. Yours truly will be there with two large telescopes giving an unique outdoor presentation in his Glow-in-the-dark gown !! Book through Hillview Cottages.

Hi everyone, we hope you all had a nice Chrissy and I'm sure you'll all enjoy welcoming in the New year. Lots of exciting things happening at the Obs. in 2026, including the pending arrival -of our Smarteye eyepiece, that shows Nebulae, Star Clusters, Binary stars,and Galaxies, in true colour !! Not only will you enjoy this experience, those same images can be sent via its built-in WiFi in the Smarteye, to your Smartphone using the needed Sky Safari app or saved to a micro SD card. More info about all this very soon.

Don't forget the Total Lunar Eclipse (Blood Moon) on March 3. Details in our recent post.

Best tine is now - late November - end of December.

JUPITER is that bright 'star' in the NE after midnight and will be on display until end of April.

Best viewing time is from mid January to mid March.
