🌟 100 Years of the Leongatha Memorial Hall (1926 - 2026)

Huge congratulations to the Leongatha & District Historical Society for their organising of such a fabulous celebration of the 100 year old Memorial Hall. 👏🏼 It was interesting, moving at times and a creative touch with Leongatha Lyric Theatre performing a re-enactment of the original opening with Brigadier General Pompey & Dr Horace Pern. Of course the South Gippsland Brass Band provided some beautiful music. 🎼🇦🇺

This is such an important place for the community to gather but the building is also a very important symbol of remembrance🌹

This week at Council I attended the Citizenship Ceremony. We had 43 conferees from 10 countries, that’s a record for South Gippsland. It’s such a beautiful celebration and quite emotional for some as they proudly recite the vows to become an Australian. Such a privilege to be a part of this evening. 🇦🇺🌟😍

Huge Congratulations to Grand Ridge Project 🌟 Looking forward to a visit soon!

We’ve had some exciting correspondence this week…

First up, we received the transfer of our liquor license 🥂 We’re thrilled to see that it includes the space between our back wall
and the Grand Ridge Rail Trail, which is fantastic news for the events space down the track.

We also received acknowledgement of ‘existing use rights’ for the restaurant from South Gippsland Shire Council. This means that the venue can continue to be used as a restaurant without the costly and time-consuming process of applying for a new permit. 🙌

These little pieces of paper represent some significant hurdles removed - we’d like to give a shout out to Tom at ABAN Consulting and the team from South Gippsland Shire Council for their support in navigating this process.

While some legal hurdles have been cleared, we still have a LOT of work to do. The entire bar and tap system needs to be replaced, and the kitchen has been gutted too. 🫣

We're proud to partner with Auslan Stage Left for an AUSLAN interpreted performance of Billy Elliot 👐🏼 This was also made possible with a grant for South Gippsland Shire Council.

Helping to make this powerful story more accessible and inclusive, an experienced theatre intepreter will join us on Sunday 12th July 🎭

The Korumburra Men’s Shed building was officially opened today celebrated by a room full of men’s shed members, community, Council staff and of course Tom McIntosh & Danny O’Brien. This project, 8 years in the making, countless hours of volunteerism, many local businesses supporting with materials and advice, State Government funding of $80,000 & some fantastic advocacy from Danny O’Brien with VicTrack! Now the group can start operating to the fullest potential 🌟

It was great to meet Australian Men’s Shed Association Community Development Liaison, Mark Tyrrell who shared with us the awesome statistic that there are around 1300 men’s sheds across Australia, that’s 400 more than McDonald’s stores!! 🌟

Of significance is the positive impact Men’s Shed has on men’s mental & physical health. Shoulder to shoulder conversation as they share a chat over a cuppa or whilst working on a project. 🌟

Massive Congratulations to all the Team at Korumburra Men’s Shed especially John Davies on a wonderful event today.. 🌟

An AusAlert from the Australian Government is scheduled on 27 July to all mobile phones.

The national alert will be sent to mobile phones across the country and will sound loudly even if devices are on silent or Do Not Disturb, meaning the sound can’t be muted in advance.

Across the country, victim-survivors of domestic and family violence rely on hidden or secondary phones to safely contact support services, document abuse or plan to leave violent situations. A loud alert from one of these devices could expose this safety planning to abusers, escalating risk.

What an incredible journey developing this budget was! Thank you to the community, staff and fellow councillors for all the feedback, robust discussion, support and advice! We adopted our 26/27 budget today! 🌟🌟🌟

South Gippsland Shire Council has officially adopted its 2026/27 Budget.

The Budget includes a responsible and deliverable $24.260 million capital works program that will support continued investment in the maintenance of our roads, buildings and infrastructure.

It also delivers a range of new projects while continuing to fund the services our community relies on every day, all while maintaining a balanced financial position.

Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback and helped shape this year's Budget.

You never can tell what kind of day you’re going to have at Council, but last Wednesday we had a tour of the Depo! And I got to experience the Elevate Work Platform. It was pretty funny getting harnessed up and climbing onto a truck and into the bucket! The staff were brilliant and I felt very safe! It was a great view up there.
