Did you know there are around 3,000 house fires each year in Victoria? That's more than any other state. The house fire risk is highest in winter, when we're using our heaters and fireplaces the most.

Now's the time to make sure our homes are as safe as possible - here's how:

🔸 Check all smoke alarms are working and replace batteries. It's recommended to have a smoke alarm in all bedrooms, living areas and hallways.
🔸Keep all heaters, fireplaces and chimneys clean, as too much dust can create a fire hazard.
🔸Do not cover heaters with clothes, put clothes to dry or put any flammable items within 1m of a fireplace.
🔸Plug electric heaters into the wall, not a power board. Heaters use a high amount of electrical current which can overload power boards and increase the risk of electrical fires.
🔸Have a home fire escape plan no matter the size and type of home.

The Fire Danger Period and Total Fire Ban Days have extremely strict restrictions - and you require permits in order to undertake any type of burn - agricultural included.

Take a look at the restrictions and make sure to follow all conditions on the permit - with no burns to take place on a Total Fire Ban days - even if a permit has been issued.

During the Fire Danger Period burning off is not allowed unless you have a written permit issued by CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, depending on where you are burning off.

Even if you have a permit, you must:

• Comply with all conditions on the permit.

• Always have an adult in attendance while the fire is alight and have the ability and equipment to put the fire out.

• The fire must be completely put out (extinguished) before the adult leaves.

• Regardless of any permits, you must ensure you comply with municipal local laws.

• Always register your burn off before lighting up, on 1800 668 511 or at firepermits.vic.gov.au

On Total Fire Ban Days, burning off is banned and permits cancelled for the duration of the Total Fire Ban.

Any existing burn offs that you may have a Fire Danger Period permit for, are not allowed and must be put out completely before the Total Fire Ban begins.
