Electric blankets, heaters and appliances are common in winter, but they need to be used safely.

Before using an electric blanket:

✅ Check for damage
✅ Do not fold it while in use
✅ Turn it off before going to sleep
✅ Keep cords clear and undamaged
✅ Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

Also remember: outdoor cooking and heating equipment must never be used inside the home. This includes BBQs, charcoal burners and outdoor gas heaters.

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of house fires in NSW

Most kitchen fires start the same way — someone walks away “just for a minute.”

If you need to leave the kitchen:
✅ Turn the stove off
✅ Move tea towels and items away from heat
✅ Keep an eye on what’s cooking at all times

A hot pan only takes moments to start a fire.

A smoke alarm that doesn't work is just a plastic disc on the ceiling.

Test yours every month. If it doesn't beep, replace the battery. If it's older than 10 years, replace the alarm.
