NATIONAL KOALA CONFERENCE - PORT STEPHENS KOALA HOSPITAL 🐨🌿

Dr Don Hudson - Radiologist and Researcher
Ron Land - President

We can't wait to welcome Dr Don Hudson and Ron Land from the Port Stephens Koala Hospital to the National Koala Conference.

Dr Hudson and Mr Land will present on Day 1 of the conference: Advancing Koala Health Through CT Imaging and Research.

Port Stephens Koala Hospital (PSKH) is leading an innovative Computed Tomography Koala Chlamydia and Koala Retrovirus Research Program (CTCR Program), aimed at transforming diagnostic capability and clinical decision-making in koala care. Advances in CT imaging have revolutionised understanding of anatomy and disease in human and domestic animal medicine. However, until recently, this technology has been underutilised in wildlife medicine, particularly for koalas.

NATIONAL KOALA CONFERENCE | MEET OUR PRESENTERS 🐨

Dr Valentina Mella - University of Sydney

We can't wait to welcome Dr Valentina Mella to the National Koala Conference. Her presentation - Lessons Learned from Koala Rehabilitation Data - will be part of our Rescue and Rehabilitation Stream on day 1.

Dr Mella’s research focuses on strengthening wildlife conservation practice. Over the past 12 years, Dr Mella has worked extensively with koalas, with a particular focus on addressing key threats including disease, habitat fragmentation, vehicle strike, and climate change. In more recent years, Dr Mella has been using data from the wildlife rehabilitation sector to develop rigorous, evidence-based standards for managing koalas.

She integrates insights from rehabilitation outcomes, such as animal health, behaviour, and post-release success, to guide practical, long-term conservation strategies. For the past two years, she has investigated the effectiveness of koala rehabilitation programs in the Sydney metropolitan region, helping to inform best-practice guidelines and improve the consistency and impact of these efforts.

Our full program will be available soon! Our in-person tickets are now nearly 70% sold - but don't forget we also have a live stream option available for you in 2026!

SHELLY BEACH ROAD TRISH πŸ’šπŸ¨

When Trish was living at the original Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, we believed the impairment to her arm from injury would prevent her from climbing. Boy has she proven us wrong!

In her Wild Koala Breeding Visitor Centre enclosure, she has tall trees to explore - and she does! Often proving herself hard to find for our volunteer guides to point out!

Thank you to Koala Carer De for sharing these latest pics of Trish loving her breakfast this week.

An analysis of nearly 12,000 koala rescue records across New South Wales indicates koalas' risk of admission into care and death increased sharply when the average maximum temperature was 27 degrees Celsius -- or 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit -- or above.

Inland north-west koala populations faced the greatest risks, the researchers found. πŸ’šπŸ¨

Rising temperatures are exacerbating threats to Australia's iconic koalas, an already vulnerable species, scientists warn.

We built our playground in the forest, not on top of it. 🌳
Every rope, every net, every bridge was designed to let you experience the beauty of the Forest from a completely different perspective, with as little impact on the environment as possible.
This is what adventure should be like when you do it right. 🐨
