Lane Cove Bush Kids

Lane Cove Bush Kids Lane Cove Bush Kids connects children with nature to spark a lifelong love of the natural world. What is Lane Cove Bush Kids?

Lane Cove Bush Kids is a local initiative of the Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society, a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation founded over 40 years ago in Lane Cove to protect our natural environment (http://lanecovebushland.org.au/ ). Lane Cove Bush Kids is designed to increase our local community’s awareness, understanding and engagement in the natural environment. It does so by pro

viding regular environmental education activities set in local bushland for children and their families.Lane Cove Bush Kids is also about building community, encouraging connections between local families and increasing our knowledge and engagement with the place we live in. Lane Cove Bush Kids commenced as a pilot in late 2010 and has recently been awarded grants from the NSW Environmental Trust ($47,512 over 3 years) and Lane Cove Council ($1,995 in 2012). With these grants and with the support of Lane Cove Council, we will:

Continue to provide fortnightly activities set in local bushland for children and their families residing in the Lane Cove Local Government Area. The target age of the children participating in these activities will be expanded from 2-5 to 2-10 years. In January 2016 Lane Cove Council formed a partnership with the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society and took over the running of the program. Ideally, the program would build a team of trained volunteers to support Lane Cove Bush Kids activities to ensure that these activities become a permanent feature of Lane Cove's local area. Documentation of the Lane Cove Bush Kids model to enable it to be easily adopted by other interested communities is another initiative to be undertaken by LCBK.

"Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree..." the song proved correct with early rain providing perfect conditions for our Kookaburras Kapers activity this morning. We watched two Kookaburras hunt for worms and grubs in the damp soil.

On our bushwalk we spotted three Kookaburra homes and found out about all the different foods the Kookaburras like to eat. Bark rubbing and blue feathers helped create life-like Kookaburras for our craft. Very koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kool!

Today on our search for Bunyip babies, we learnt about all the kinds of egg-laying creatures that we can find in our creeks - frogs, fish, turtles and eels. It was lovely to see the creek flowing beautifully after the early morning rain and to watch the Kookaburras catching all the worms!

We still have spaces available for Kookaburra Kapers next week, which will be a real laugh! Book online here: https://Kookaburra19May.eventbrite.com.au

Get exploring and snap and share your bushland habitat discoveries as part of the Wild about Lane Cove photo challenge this year from 15 April to 30 April.

Your challenge? Photograph a particular aspect of Lane Cove bushland and then share why your discovery makes good habitat for our wildlife. It could be a flower that provides nectar for birds, a pond where eels are found or a grove of trees which support possums. Maybe you spot a water dragon basking on a rock or a beetle hiding under a log. You will be amazed at what you find and how different animals use all the different spaces in our bushland!

Submit your pictures along with a short blurb (25 words or less) about why you think your discovery makes good habitat for our wildlife and go in the draw to win great prizes in the Wild about Lane Cove photo challenge!

Explore with family or friends or go solo and get creative with your camera! Get the kids involved too and reap the benefits of feeling happier and healthier as a result of spending time in nature.
