We're on a mission to find out more about Louis Edgar Cazaly — a WWI veteran from Montrose whose remarkable story has been hidden in the shadows of history for over a century.

Louis served with the 59th Battalion on the Western Front, and a selfless act he performed in the trenches helped inspire what is today known as Veteran Housing Australia. He's remembered on the Montrose War Memorial and the Shire of Lillydale WWI Honour Board — but we still have so much to learn about him.

We're searching for:

👨‍👩‍👧 Any descendants or relatives who may hold the key to his story

Few words say so much. In the trenches, far from home, Lou Cazaly's quiet compassion for a sleeping young soldier speaks to the character of the man behind the uniform.
Lou's story didn't end on the battlefield. His resilience and spirit were a direct inspiration for William Hawkins, who founded the Carry On Club in 1932 — a lifeline for veterans navigating life after service.

Every line tells a story. ✏️

When we set out to build our new website, we knew we wanted artwork that captured the heart of what we do — so we commissioned the incredibly talented Veteran Artist, Barry Spicer, to bring it to life by hand.

And wow, did he deliver.

This stunning pencil sketch captures a journey so many of our veterans know all too well — arriving with little, unsure of what's next. On one side, a man alone on a bench. On the other, a man walking through an open door.

That door? That's us. That's what we do.

Whether a veteran needs crisis accommodation or a permanent place to call home, we walk alongside them every step of the way — from the bench to the doorstep and beyond.

Yesterday we launched our new website. Today we want to tell you why it exists.

This is W.L. Hawkins. A young soldier who went to war, witnessed something he could never unsee, and made a promise in the dark that changed everything.

On the battlefields of France in 1918, he watched his fellow soldiers — men who had given everything for their country — and made a solemn vow:

"I shall never forget these men."

He didn't. And neither shall we.

That promise became Veteran Housing Australia — and more than 90 years later, that same instinct to look after your own is at the heart of everything we do.
