Do you understand the Plastics Identification Code? Here is a quick guide to what those little numbers stamped into your plastics actually mean and how we can "Be A Good Sort" at home.

The Plastics Identification Code (PIC) is the small triangle of arrows with a number (1–7) stamped on many plastic items. It’s not a recycling symbol! it’s a material ID system that tells you what type of plastic the item is made from. This helps recycling facilities sort plastics correctly and helps you make better choices at home.

Each number represents a different plastic type:
1 – PET — Used in drink bottles, salad dressing bottles, some food packaging.
2 – HDPE — Found in milk bottles, shampoo bottles, cleaning product containers.
3 – PVC — Pipes, vinyl products, some food wrap.
4 – LDPE — Bread bags, frozen food bags, squeezable bottles.
5 – PP — Yoghurt tubs, ice‑cream containers, takeaway containers, bottle lids.
6 – PS — Disposable plates, cups, meat trays, foam packaging.
7 – Other — Mixed plastics, bioplastics, polycarbonate.

Not all of these plastics can go in your household recycling bin. Please remember to recycle only numbers 1,2 and 5. These are widely accepted because they can be efficiently processed and turned into new products. Luckily a lot of our supermarket items are made from these three plastics.

Recycling correctly reduces contamination, keeps valuable materials in circulation, and helps councils run more efficient recycling programs. A quick check of the number on your plastic can make a real difference.

Disaster Ready Fund – Round 4 Now Open
Applications are now open from 29 May to 1 July 2026 for Round 4 of the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) - a key investment in strengthening community resilience and reducing the impacts of natural disasters before they occur.
Since its launch, more than $600 million has been committed to disaster risk reduction projects across Australia. This comes at a critical time, with over 80% of local government areas experiencing natural disasters since July 2022, and many communities facing repeated severe weather events.
Round 4 provides an opportunity for local governments, community organisations and eligible stakeholders to deliver projects that:
✅ Improve disaster preparedness
✅ Strengthen infrastructure resilience
✅ Reduce future disaster risk
The DRF is a competitive, merit-based program, delivered in partnership with state and territory governments. Applications must be submitted via your relevant Lead Agency.
📋 We encourage you to review the guidelines and explore opportunities that will benefit your community.
🔗 More information and guidelines are available on GrantConnect and the National Emergency Management Agency website.
