Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Starts with Collective Care. 💜

Every day, services across CatholicCare Sydney walk alongside individuals and families experiencing the impacts of DFV. Behind every statistic is a person rebuilding their sense of safety, connection and hope. For many, recovery is complex and long-term, requiring trusted relationships, community support and ongoing care.

At CatholicCare Sydney, this work is grounded in trauma-informed, child-inclusive and person-centred practice, supported by the Safe & Together Model. This approach keeps children’s safety at the centre, strengthens caregiver capacity, and promotes accountability for those using violence. Through programs across Children & Family Services, families are supported to rebuild stability, strengthen relationships and reconnect with community.

CatholicCare Sydney stands alongside victim-survivors, families and communities impacted by domestic and family violence, while continuing to advocate for safer futures through collective care, early support and long-term healing.

Our team attended the Family & Relationship Services Australia (FRSA) National Conference 2026, held in Brisbane last week. We were fortunate enough to proudly sponsor the conference for another year. 👏🏻

Our opportunities to connect with and learn from many other organisations was crucial, helping us to understanding changes in priorities and the sector, whilst sharing with others the impactful work that CatholicCare Sydney does.

We had both practitioners and representatives of the Children and Family Services leadership team attend across the three days.

"It is always inspiring to come together and learn from the considerable knowledge and innovation of the sector, working towards better outcomes for families and communities." says Director of Family Law & Relationship Services, Samantha Jones.

A big thank you to FRSA for having us there and being a strong supporter of the work that we do. Thank you to our team as well who attended and represented CatholicCare Sydney.

May marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month — a crucial time more than ever to raise awareness and commit meaningful change in stopping violence against women and children.

Quality Lead for Family Violence and Trauma Informed Practice, Courtney, reflects on the role CatholicCare Sydney and the community plays in promoting safety and wellbeing for those who walk through our doors.

"Every person has the right to feel safe and respected in their family. At CatholicCare Sydney, preventing domestic and family violence starts with understanding the extensive harm women and children experience through coercive control and abuse. We respond with holistic support that strengthens safety, promotes healing, and ensures their voices are heard across systems.

We also challenge attitudes that justify or excuse control and abuse, and model respect and equality. Through compassionate accountability, we support men to make choices that promote safety and wellbeing in their families."

Nora's journey as a CatholicCare Companion has been an enlightening experience. This Volunteer Week, we celebrate the time and energy that Nora and other volunteers have given to support their community.

Starting this work five years ago, Nora had a calling to become a companion. Nora shares the importance of this work from a faith-based angle and what it all means to her.

National Families Week is a time to celebrate the important role families play in our communities and recognise the strength, care and connection they provide every day. 🧡✨

At CatholicCare, we are proud to walk alongside children, young people and families through a range of services that support wellbeing, safety and connection across all stages of life. From early intervention and parenting support to counselling, family relationship services and school wellbeing programs, our teams are committed to helping families thrive.

This year’s National Families Week theme, “Every child, every where”, highlights the importance of ensuring all children feel safe, supported and connected, no matter their circumstances. It reflects the shared responsibility we all have in helping children and families thrive within their homes, schools and communities.

Throughout the week, we acknowledge the resilience of families in all their forms and thank our staff, partners and community for the role they play in creating safe, inclusive and supportive environments for children and families across Sydney.

To mark the week, our Lewisham office came together for a special morning tea filled with connection, laughter and reflection. Staff enjoyed a fun game of ‘Pin the Headshot on the Baby’, matching team members to photos of their younger selves — a light-hearted way to celebrate childhood, family and the importance of connection.
